Mike H acker was th ird earl y, but sli pped behind Bryan Bigelow. Varnes pressu red for a while, bu t Coolbeth slow ly pulled clear. Varnes settled int o second, while the battle over the last 'd irect transfer spot lu rned int o a thre e- rid er s truggle as Bige low a nd Hacker we re joined by J.R. Schnabel in th e quest. Bigelo w p re vailed, se ndi ng Schna bel and Hacker to the semis. King led Mor ehead off the line in the seco nd heat , but soon left Moreh ead beh ind to fend off Parker, Jay Springs teen, Dan Stanley a nd Mike Varnes. King easily pulled to a comfo rtable lead, where he could experiment with sev eral d ifferent lin es for the main. Morehead an d Parker pulled away, bu t Park er continued the figh t for second . Mor eh ead was able to withstand all of the champ's ch a lle nges and h eld o n to th e s po t. Springsteen led Mike Varn es, Gart h Bastian and Stanl ey into the semis . Ther e were several goo d races in the third heat. The best was the race for the lead .
