King had started from the second row outside, and it proved his undoing early in the race. "I thought ma ybe I could sw o op them on the outside going into turn one," King said . " Eve ry t h ing we n t together real good until we go t to tum on e. Th en the y all drifted w ide on me, and I wa s out there and just cou ld n't go an yw here." King m ade a steady rise through the field . "I knew I passed a bunch of guys, but I didn't know if they were breaking or what," King sa id. " I wa s ca tch ing them so fas t. Brett Land e s (A u d iovox / Q ua ke r State) staye d with Kin g as both closed on Kopp. "I was closing on Kopp and kind of wondered wh at was goi ng on with him , but I hung with Rich and Kopp for a few laps," Landes said. 'Then I started making a few mistakes, and abo u t lap 20 or 21 I started to fade a little bit. I jus t coul d n' t d o any be tte r than fifth today." Ea ke n Ra cin g /R od La k e / . Racing for Kids' Will Davi s was another rider m ov in g u p fro m d eep in the pack . Da vis wou ld end up sixth as he beat his teammate (fo r the weekend) , Larry Pegram . Both riders got by a fad ing Stan ley. "Sk ip had a really goo d m ot orcycl e for m e , it w orked really good ," Davis said . "That thing was a ho rse. Th at's w hat yo u need here, to be able to pa ss. I was able to ge t a drive off th e comer and pas s down the front straight. I found a big bump on the outsid e, but I wa s making so much time up th ere, that I kept go ing back . I co u ld just keep rolling around th e ou tside. I wa s gaining 10, 15 bike leng ths going into turn on e." Pegram used an open we ek end on the road race schedule to return to th e dirt track wars .
