Oil leak Davey Camlln (27) won back-to-back Springfield mil es on labor Day Weekend In 1996. .A powerful letter of thanks This is a letter th at I never th ought I wou ld need to write, and it has been very d ifficult to find the right words to exp ress to all of you how I feel. I ha ve known Da ve si nce I was 14 years old and he was 16 years old . Even then, Dave was alr ead v on a miss ion to be a mo to rcycle ra cer on th e Grand Na tional circui t. I started going to races with him as his gi rlfriend, th en as his fiancee, and finall y as his wife. I always u n de rs tood th e - d a n g e rs of being a motorcycle race r, but I also understood completely that this was Dave's dream. I watched Dave crash so many times; some were not so bad, and others were terri ble. I was bv his side when he had to be away fro~ racin g, and watched how mu ch it hurt him not to be a part of everything. I am also proud to say I was a lw ays a part o f the good ti mes, too . Watch in g Dave win a Gr and Nationa l race filled my heart wi th joy and mad e m e realiz e e v en m or e w hy h e h a d always worked so hard on his race progra m a nd s tr ived to b e th e best. Bad times or good times , Dave was al ways co nfident that racin g mot or cycles was wha t he loved and wan ted to do . Qu ittin g was not an optio n for him or for me. Believe me , 'a s a wife of a racer, the thoughts go through your mind a billion times: What if something terrible happens that he cannot recover from? I wou ld always push tho se thoughts out of my head because they h urt too much to think about, even for just a moment. I firml y believe that racing motor cycles d id not take Dave's life. God sim ply had a bett er plan for his grea tness . During thi s unbearabl e time in my life, all of you, family and friends, have joined toge the r a nd given me so much sup po rt . 1 have recei ved e-rnai ls, hundred s of cards and endless phon e ca lls. Believe me wh en I tell you that this has helped me tremendou sly, along wi th the res t of our family. O ne of Dave's on ly fears abo ut racing was not of dying but of leaving me alone . I kn ow Da ve is wa tchi ng over us and smiling ha ppily because so many of you have reached ou t to me to help take care of me. Thi s wo uld have bee n the nu mber-one thing that was important to him. . I mi ss Dave terribly, and m y heart ac hes every minute o f th e day bein g w itho u t him . I love him wit h all of my heart. And thanks to all of yo u, I kn ow t h at I a m n ot alo ne . We will a ll rem ember Da v e forever in o u r ow n ind ividual w ays, wit h ou r own mem ories, and I am cer tain that everyone of u s w ill fi nd 'ou rselves sm ili ng as we remember. . Missy Camlin Rock Island, IL Ha vin g been a scram bler 35 yea rs ago and more recen tly a vintage road racer, am I bein g a bit too alarmist or sensitive ab out oil leaks ? Jim Leon ard ' s (cre w chi ef for the Vanc e & Hi nes Ducati team) statement about Ben Bostrom ' s oil leak - "if it w asn 't leakin g o n th e pipe , no one would have kn own about it" - is quite incredulous, to my thinking . I' ve even read rider interviews wher e they ha ve sta ted that they knew they we re oiling the track because th eir feet were slipping off the footpegs. Unbelievable! Oka y, racin g (a ny kind ) is dangerou s - and on two w heels it's more so. On a tra ck that 's being oiled, it' s so mewhere between folly and assisted su icid e. Do they really need "Dr. Jack " on the track? If Jim Leonard is really a pro fessional, is it a requisite to leave one's spo rtsm a n ship, m o r a ls a n d co nscie nce a t hom e when yo u go racing? Does th is type of ment ality have to exist? If I were ru nni ng the show, there wo u ld be scrutineers in the pi t, and at the end of the race anvo ne with an obvious oil leak wo uld ~ gra n ted an automatic one- race suspension. Come in d u ring th e race a nd park it w he n yo u n otice an oil leak - a nd yo u ' re h om e free. I gua ra ntee th er e wo u ld be a lot of screaming for a whi le, but I also guarantee less rid ers and ma chines would be turned into expensive tumblew eed s.
