Sober Photo by Gen Moore SACRAMENTO, CA,JULY 10 For the second time in the 1999 Sideways Saturda ys Cal-Exp o Speed way season , Jimm y Sisemore dominated the Div ision One Scratch a nd Han d icap ma in even ts . In th e Ha ndicap main, Bobby Hedd en , Bob Hi cks, Jim m y "The ja mmer" Sisemo re a nd Bart Bast all.lined up across the 50-y a rd line. Ten ya rds in fro nt sat Ch ad Felicio, and Robert Curry rou nd L out the field 'CI on the 30. Bast was the first rider to move at the start; in fact, Bast actually mo ve9 bejore the starting ta pes were released . "I co u ldn't bel iev e l ,got away w ith that roll er ," said Bas t after t he event. " I al most passed Chad before th e firs t co rne r. I had to back off OC"CilUSC if I passed him before the first turn, they' d sure ly have sto pped it." Wi th Cu rry in the lea d fro m the s ho rtes t yardage, it took Bast only a lap a nd a ha lf to move un de r Felicio and Curry on the d eceivin g· Iy grippy blu e ins ide groov e. Wh ile Bast was wor king on Feli cio a nd then Curry, Sise mo re was following suit and moving up, looking for a way inside of Bast, which he found as the tw o circled the track for the fourth lap . "I really like this track," said the smiling Jammer as he clutched both of hi. main-event trophies after the race. '1 have a lot of confide nce here. Ed did a great job with the bike and it really showed." Once Sisemore muscled inside ,of Bast, it was clear sailing to the checkered flag. Bast finished in second place, and Curry a nd Felicio held on to third and fou rth. Hed d en was fifth, an d his newly returned teammate Hicks was sixth. The Scratch IThlin staged with Si..c;emo re on the pole, Billy Jarmiro in two, Hed den in lane thr ee and Bast on the outside. \Vhen Sisemore drew the pole, it immediately put the !'Lost of the field at a bit of a disadvantage, conside ring the way Sisemore was rid ing and the nature of the hu g-thepole-for-dear-life condition of the California State Fairgr ounds oval. Tru e to form, th e Ja m mer jumped ou t in front a nd led the talen ted field throu gh the first turns. Janniro wa s the seco nd away and on the throttl e for the next 3 1/ 2 laps , tryin g to catch the fleeing Sisemore. &15t ran third u ntil mid way thro.ugh th e final lap, when he unseated Jann iro from his third-pla ce points spo t. When B<1st took second away from Janniro , it left the fastest Aubwn resident with doubl e sccondplace finishes in the mai ns. Janniro held o n to third and Hedden headed home fourth. Schaeffer shakes up KB Night Motocross By BreI Eckert SACRAMENTO, CA,JULY9 At th e la st rou nd of KB Racing 's Spring Motocross Se ri es, Yam a ha- mo u n te d Rob ert Schaeffer finally wen t home with a class win, in the hotly contested Vet Beginner class . Schaeffer used cons isten t 2-1 moto finis hes to score the win at round six of the Roseville Cycle /Rancho MC Disma nt lin g /M C Co nccpts zRa cc rsP i t Shop-spo nsored series. _ Mot o o ne bega n with series leader Pete Hame l emerging in front after the riders snaked. thr ou gh the fir st few turn s of th e KB circu it. Ham el is used to checki ng out a fte r nailin g down the holeshot, and this moto started off no d ifferently. Schaeffer was next in line, with Jon d eRoco threat e n ing in thi rd an d John Hod ge and David Ada ms rou ndi ng out the top five. On lap two, Hod ge had some problems an d went down, remo unting in 11thoAdams used his miscue to gain some momentum and L"'l ppt.>d. d eRoco, moving up two spo ts to third . Schaeffer kept him hones t back in second , but the race was all Ham el' s. Also ge tti ng int o his rhythm on .the secon d lap was Jeff Gorm.ln , who was maki ng up ground after a mid pac k start, and he finis hed up lap two in fifth . Ha mel and Schaeffer set a torrid pace for the rt..'St of the moto , and no one ·was a ble to adva nce , and when th e checke rs flew it was Ham el, Schaeffe r and Ad.1ms going one, two and three. Im med iately following the 50cc rela y race d uri ng inte rmission, Hamel had to ride .the second moto of the Vet d ass. The little KTM mu st have thr own off his timing, as he was nea r the back of the pack as they negotiated their way throu gh the first tu rn . Schaeffer took cha rge of the mot o a nd se t a blistering pace u p fro n t. Ada ms was up front aga in, along with Gorma n in third . Ham el made up a lot of ground on the first lap and wen t over the t.lbletop finish line in sixth. Sch. effer was all alone up front, taking the 1 ht.'St lines and keep ing Adams at bay. Hamel continued on a steady rise to the front, picking off a rider per lap, and by the wh ite-flag lap he was up to third, behind Schaeffer and Ada ms. When the checkered flag flew, Schaeffer d aimed the w in, and his 2~ 1 finishes gave him the ove rall. Ada ms held on for second ove r Hamel, but was edged out to third overall on the evening, as Hamel's 13 scores we re be tte r than his 3-2. Martinez got out front in the inside line to claim an early lead . Behind them, a tigh t pac k of rid ers includ ing Akiha ru Shigeno, Ciccotto, Shane Prieto, john-D Bowman and Gabriel Henning all scram bled to run up front. Ciccotto quickly worked his GSX-R750 up to four th place, passed Shige no and se t his sights on front-runne r Marti nez . He made hi s mo ve h a lf wa y thro ugh the course, first passing Naru p on the Muzzy Raptor 750 and then Martinez on his ZX9. Ciccotto hit the fron t straight in first place, bu t Martinez kickt.>d in the power to reclaim the lead as they launched throu gh tum one agai n. Crc.;sing the start /finish line at the halfway ma rk, Marti nez had regain ed first place in a two-way bat tle for the lead with Ciccotto .
