T Although Matiasevich claims he no longer enjo ys racing, he still appears to have a strong competitive spirit. Coming through the combined 125/25Occ Pro gate in fourth , he passed 2S0cc Pro Jason Dubi n and 125cc Pro Andrew Labrador to take second before the first lap was over. Matiasevich and Umphres ran bar to bar throu gh th e main whoop sec tio n before rubbing elbo ws in the U- turn. Matiasevich to ok the lead. After the first rnoto, Matiasevich reit erated his di slike for racing. " 1 keep in good shape," he said . " 1 like to rid e, bu t not race ." Umphre s , how e ver, wa s very enthu sed about the first moto . " I'm rea l happy with my finis h," he sa id. "This was my firs t rac e as a Pro. He (Matiasevich) has got many National Champions hips." Matias evich go t a better s ta rt in the s econd moto, foIlow in g Umphres through the holesho t turn in second . Labrador and Dubin foll ow ed cl os e behind. Umphres appeared to relax more in the second moto. He sett led down in to a smooth rhythm, blo cking Matiase vich through every turn for three laps. The two racers had the crowd on their feet as they carne through the spectator triples bar to bar. Matiasevich turned up th e heat, takin g the ins ide of the next turn. As the riders bumped bars, Matiasevich took com mand , ca pturing first . Matiasevich carried the lead to the finish , followed by Umphres, Labrador and Dubin. Th e North Ala bama Trail Ride rs Association laid ou t the 7.S-mile track a t a ne w location fo r it s 186 compe tit ors . Th e rid er turnout wa s equaIl y d iv id ed . between Mid-South and SERA racer s, but it was SERA rid er Jerry Gibso n who carne in tops overall . "Th is wa s a perfect tr ack ," Gi bson commen ted . 'They could n' t have don e an y better." Third off the start, Gibson w as ted no time in catching up to Mid-South rider Lance Smith, who had cl aim ed th e holeshot, Smith fell abo ut halfway into the lap, and Gibson made his move for second place in the AA class. Performance Cycle / Red Line /Fox-backed Gary Hendricks carne thr ou gh the first lap in first place, and Gibson followed in 20 seconds. "During my second lap," Hen dricks sai d, "m y brakes go t ho t, and I pulled over to put so me w at er on them . Jerry passed me immediately." . Lance soo n followed. The Hattiesburg Cycles-bac ked Gibson gai ned a 50-second lead on his second lap, and he go t fas ter on each of the remaining two la ps . His last lap was the fastest lap of all, and he carne in w ith a two-minute lead on 250cc/ Open A-cJass Mid-So uth rival Du stin Gibson. T Lance Smith cont inu ed in seco n d p la ce o n th e seco n d lap, whil e Gary H endricks wa s d own by 20 seconds, and Sarge's Cycle s/Oakley / Fox-backed P.A. Allen was on Hendricks' rear tir e. On the th ird lap, Smith pulled over to rem ove a vine, which se t him back , an d Hendricks and All en continu ed their Mid-South battle in front of him. M ean whil e, 2S0cc /Open A rid er Dustin Gibson pulled into th e scoring tent in third place o n his third lap, but during his last lap, just before the end of th e race , he laid o u t new trail to get aro und four rid ers, including Smith and Dustin ' s main co n te n de r in the 250cc/Open A class, Clint Robi nson. All en also jumped in fro nt of H endricks' bike seco nds before th e check.ered flag. "While I wa s o u t front," Hendricks sa id, " I thought, 'Ma n, that rid er is corning up fast behind me: Then I loo ked to my sid e and it was P.A. who sho t out in front of me." Allen carne through the tent to grab second place in the AA class while Hendricks rea ched for third . A few lapped riders passed th rough, and the n Du stin Gibson pulled in to th e.tent for firs t place in his 2S0cc/Open A clas s. A ll en was 10 seco nds d own from Dustin Gibson's tim e, so Du stin carne in second p lace overall, while All en was third overall.
