Dick ' s Su zuki/Dave Burks Mot or spo rts' Joe Kopp kept the string alive by taking his third m ile victo ry of the year and lead ing a six-ride r Suzuki sweep of the top spots in the 12-rider main event. Two h ea ts trimmed the 14 entri es down to a 12-rider main even t. Wolf Racin g /Suburban H-D -backed Bob Buffington grabbed the lead of the first heat on hi s Su zuk i, but was qui ckl y reel ed in by the Team Powell /Ha ll's Motorsport s a nd th e KK Motor cycl e Supply / F&S Su zu ki-backed Suzukis of J. R. Sc hna b e l a n d Steve Moreh e ad . Schnabel led th e six -la p race fo r five laps, but Morehead drafted by at the finish line for the win. Buffington held on fo r thi rd over Jess Roed er, w ho was aboard the Suzu ki o f Ivan Ca rl. Brett Landes conti nued to have teething problem s with h is R.J. Po la ri s & Victo ry / James Landes-bac ked Hond a, a n d finis hed fifth. Six th wen t to A rt Skaggs/ B&B Racing's Joey Brock. Kopp led heat tw o from the start an d pulled away fro m early challengers in th e fo rm o f Wh i te's Harle y -D a vid so n/ M&S Suz u ki's Ro y Mill er an d Rogers /Lake Ra cin g ' s Ga ry Roge rs, with Rogers pulling into a solid seco nd as Roy Miller slipped back into a battl ewi t h Rob Mill er and hi s H ow ell ' s Harley-Da vid s on / Finish Lin e Tech / Saddlemen-backed Harl ey. Scott Deubler was leading a tight battle for fifth on his new Cheney-framed Yam a ha . The To tal Performance Racers /Topeka Harley-Davidson-backed Deubler had his race corne to a premature end w hen he in advertently hi t the kill swi tch. Widman Buell /Jim Wagn erbacked Brian Kromroy took his Buell to fifth over the Mod es to Harley-Da vidso n/ Su pe rT ra p p Harley o f Mich ell e DiSalvo. When the 12-lap main eve nt took off, Kopp led Buffingt on and Morehead into turn on e. At the en d of one lap, Morehead and Rogers liad dropped Buffington to fourth, and Schnabel was on the move after a poor start. Kopp and Morehead pulled to a commanding lead . Kopp w as abl e t o fend off most of Morehead 's advan ces. Th e veteran did briefly take the lead on lap nine, but Kopp quickly ret ook it. Back in the pack, Schnabel had taken third from Rogers, bu t had little hope of catchin g the fleeing lead ers. On the last lap, as Morehead tried to d raft by Kopp, Rogers pu t on e last charge on Schnabel. Both attempts would com e up short. Roy Miller go t by Buffingt on for fifth. DiSalv o finished seven th, on e lap down to the Suzuki parad e on her Harley. HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPORTSTER PERFORMANCE NATIONAL DPC Racin g /Biker s Choice's Willie McCoy is on a ro ll. The Texan finish ed his third consecutive HDSP main eve nt wi th a big lead, provin g that he was the cream of the Sportster crop on a d ay at Du Qu o in that saw no less th a n 30 entries. Three Hl-ride r heats wou ld send the top six riders from the two fastest heats and five fro m the slo west into the mai n event. McCoy blasted to a hu ge lead in the fi rst hea t ove r G u t te r r idge H arl ey Davi dso n 's Scott Stum p and Dal e ' s Ha rley-Davi dsons Jam es Hart. Ha rt took second from Stump, but was soo n under fire from his neighbor Paul Morgan , who was making a rar e appearan ce ab oard a Mo r oney' s H arl e y-D a vid son /1 -S00-FASTHOG Sportster. The Real McCoy ' s /Japan C ompan y-ba ck ed Yuhiko Hirao held second ea rly befor e giving way to Skip Fordyce's Billy Mar tin, who also pulled away leaving Brian Kromroy, Michelle DiSalv o, Hira o, Joe Du vall and Donnie Steward all fighting over four qualifying spots . Tim Eades, John Faulkner and Tim Lor ge battl ed over the last transfer spo t, with Ead es taking it. McCoy led the first lap, with Roed er, Mo rga n a n d Ru s s ell givi ng c hase . Roeder was the first to sli p off the bliste ring pa ce . McC o y a n d Rus s ell exchanged the lead seve ral tim es as th ey pulled a way from Morgan. Suddenl y, at the end of lap seven, Russell 's hand sho t into the air and he coas ted to a sto p in turn tw o. The top thr ee position s were then set, but the remainder of th e field w as packed tight, as Rob Miller held a narrow ad va ntage over Bergstrom, Ead ie, Wait, Hart and Stump. Eadie hor sepowered his way into fourth in the closi ng lap s, with Miller, Bergstrom, Wait, Hart and Stump right be hi nd him . A pos trace inspection found Eadie 's engine to b e o ve rsized, however, an d h e was strip ped of his four th-place finish, moving everyo ne up one spot.
