Chaparra l Suzuki's Tom Klpp goes the extra mile for his fans . Rider kudos A straight fight I w ould like to take thi s time to g ive kudos to Tom Kipp and his accessibility while in the pits and paddock areas . To be fair , qu ite a few riders are very kind an d approacha ble while in the middle of bike prep and planni ng racin g strategy, etc. Dou g Chandl er, the Ha yd en brothers , the Rob erts bro th ers a n d o the rs have go ne ou t of their way to sign autogra phs and take pictures wit h m y son on several occasions . But Kipp has go ne way above the regul ar acces s by goi ng ou t of his wa y to no t only be kind an d s peak to m y so n, Erick, but to ta ke not ice of A d isap pointed boy w ho ha d bee n unable to get a fellow ride r's attention, and" he came over an d in troduced h im self as well as to sign num erous . posters and a T-shirt. My so n and r a ttend all of the California an d Las Vegas ra ces and , a t ea ch one, Tom has been the epitome of a gentlem an and all-around good gu y. I know that at times the pa ddock can be quite hectic a nd rid er s ha ve many things to worry ab ou t other than pleasing the fans, but Tom Kipp is in a class by himself. For me, it was also great to see Kel Ca rruthers again. Chris Knudson Atascadero, CA While I enjoyed Paul Ca rruthers' cove rage of the Laguna Seca Wor ld Superbike race, I just want to p oin t ou t a minor mis take. In you r s to ry you w rote, "While Bostrom ma y s till have to live for a w hile longer with the demo ns of not having had the opportu nity to bea t Gobert in a strai ght fight..." You, alo ng with sev eral other reporters, s ee m to ha ve forg ot te n the AM A Sup e rbi ke Na tio nal at Loudon where Ben (by finishing second) beat Gobert in a strai gh t fight. Also, tha nks for the Cycle Neue Web site. It's good med icine wh ile wai ting for snail mail to deliver the print ed version. Scot! Turner images@mindspring.com earned in . I have been th e 0-36 cross cou n try stewa rd for the pa st 10 years , and I believe an Expe rt or Profession al motor cycle racer is an expert mot orcycle ra cer in a n even t a nd shou ld never, nev er rid e in th e ovice class a t anv type of event. In my book this is called sandbagg ing, and it onl y takes trophies ' and advancement poi nts away from the r eal Novice rid ers wh o w ou ld have earne d them . We h ad a p ro fess io nal s peed w a y rider earn th e number -on e Vet A plate in his first year. It wasn' t easy for him an d he hasn 't been back, but he did it becau se that is what a real professional does . To n am e the big na me s from 0 -36 would take too m uch space, but Kenny Roberts is the m ost fam ous of them . The re are man y out there who went on to fame and for tu ne who lea rned their trad e in 0 -36 off-road competition, and if this so u n d s like I' m prou d o f m y ado p te d '800- rid er -p lu s fa m ily, th en you're right. The District 36 racers, their fa m ili es a n d th e ir pit crews a re t h e gre atest peop le in the wo rld and I love them all. I cha llenge all of the motorcycle-racing p rom oters out there to kee p the Pros an d the Experts out of the Novice and A mateur cla sses a n d to m ak e yo ur motor cycle races worthwhile to th os e who d esire to compe te on an even playing field with competition from others at their skill level. The en tire sport will benefit from this a ttitude. Now I wi ll use this soapbo x to help me sta rt m y 2-year -old di rt bike. Edd Haymond ehaymond@caIwest.net Perhaps you can call the big office in Picker.ington and let them know that if they felt the same way as you, then Professional road racer Kurtis Roberts would be granted his Professional dirt track racing license and we would have a Rob ert s compet ing i n the Grand National Championship again... Editor -[stand corrected:..
