Popp' s win on a '70 Ho nda 750-4 wa s an uncontest ed one in Saturday's Formula 750 race. For a tim e it looked as thou gh Popp would be challenged by Ga ry Nixo n, b u t th e two-time AMA Gra nd . Na tional Champio n's ride came up short when a broken cam chai n sidelined his Herit age Racing Honda fou r. Popp fin ished a very close secon d on Su nd ay to Rob Tu lu ie, riding .a Big 0 Triu m ph 750 twin, the same machine on which Tu lui e won Saturday' s Formula Vintage co n test and p laced second to N orton rid er Jim Str uke in th a t d ay' s Sportsma n 750cc eve nt. In AHRMA' s mod ern classes , J.D . Hord came up the big winner, riding his H ond a Hawk-based racer to four wins in Battl e of the Twins Formula Two and Fo rm u la Th ree, each time over Steve Von Borstel's Suzu ki 650. One of the best of the mod ern races was Saturday' s com bi ned Super Mon o Two an d Skorpio n Cup. Mike Kind elin Jr. battled Tim Kisieleski, wi th Kisieleski getting his MuZ Skorpion around Kind elin lat e in the race. Tha t lasted a lap, until Kind elin reg ained the lead and held on ' for the win. Mike Kindelin Sr. was third. The trio finished that way both days. In the Super Mono portion, Mike Gontesky and his Bare Bones Machi ne crossed the line first on Satu rday, closely follow ed by Honda-mounted Ran dy Gro ve and class champ Ma rk Ha tten on ano the r BBM. Hatten wo n Sunday' s Super Mono Two contest over Ho rd, w hile Conte ky opted s to ride the trial instead . Eric Wood used a Ducati 748 to win Battle of Twi ns Form ula On e and Sound of Thunder on Saturday, in both cases co ming fr om beh in d to d o so. Af te r mu ch shuffling and d icing, Kris Aug us t was runner up in the Form ula One conte st, ahead of Ch risto pher Bloch and Jona tha n Glaefke, Sunday's class wi nner .
