The Barb er Vintage Motorsports Museum announced on July 15 tha t it plan s to build a new museum an d ro ad racin g track in Birmingha m, Alab am a . On July 13, th e Birm ing ha m City Co u ncil ap p roved a n agreement a llo w ing th e Ba rb e r M u seu m , a 501(c) 3 n onprofit orga niza tion, to lease 700 acres of city owned land near Interst at e 20 and th e Lee ds in ter ch ange. The Ba rber Mot o rsports Park, a $33 million investmen t, wou ld be lar gely fina nced by the museum, with infrastructure assistance from gove rn mental entities. The museum and roa d race cou rse sh ou ld take 18 to 24 m onth s to co ns truct and 'sho uld be in operation in 2001. "We wa ~t to d o thi s project for several reasons," said George Barber, the muse um's found er . "Firs t, we have the largest, and we think the bes t, collection of motorcy cles in t he Western Hemisphere, and we want to show the m off pro p erl y .
