Team Green's Jeff Gibson filed in second, with Plotts third . Walker established himself as the guy to beat, pulling out an iramedi a te adva n tage on the opening lap . Plotts passed Gibson over the Pro Action Tunnel jump to take second. At the completion of the opening lap , th e ru nn ing order was Walker, Plotts a nd Gibson, and then Jimmy Wil son , w ho was p laying cat ch-up aft er a bad s ta r t. Rand y Valade wa s in th e ne xt position, back in the top five . Wal ker continued to dis tan ce himself from the pack, gai ning a three-second lead by the thi rd lap, but Walker's advantage wen t away on the fou rth lap whe n the fro n t en d of his Yamaha p low ed through a sa nd berm. Walker saved it from crashing, but th e adva ntage he had established was gone, and Plotts was now hot on his rear fende r. Meanwhile, the third spo t was bei ng h e a vil y co n tested be tw ee n Wilso n , Valade and Gibson. This wo uld change as the two took the green flag, with Walk er, us ing an inside line over the fin ish-line jump an d then the inside line goi ng int o th e right-handed d ownhill off-camber, taking ove r the second spot.
