JULY 11 ormer Mick y Th ompson Rook ie of the Year Rob Drew returned from a nearly fatal accid ent to once again find his place among the motocross elite with two class victories at the inaugural ru nning of the CMC Amateur Summercross, held insid e the world-ren owned Lo s Ang eles Mem orial C oli seum. Drew's wins carne in the 250cc and Over .25 Pro classes. "We provided so me consu lting to help make the cou rse more userfr iendly for our a ma teurs, bu t for th e mo st part it's a tru e supercross track. " Drew, who won the Anahei m Stadiu m Ult ra c ross in 199 3, th ou g h t he wo uld never ride again, much less race. "I was involve d in a head-o n collisio n with a tr u ck," Dr ew sa id, "I was F '" '" '" 52 ju m ping thi s step-dow n on one of our pra ctice tra cks and on my last jump, a truck w as coming u p the ba ck sid e. I had many serious injuries, but the worst was that I had severe skull damage and m y e y e socket was bl own out. But thanks to Chuck Franklin, w ho is not onl y a motocross race r but a lawy er, too, I was able to ge t back on my feet and ge t put back together wi th titanium plates and a lot of other hig h-tech parts." Drew's comeback had all the ingredients of a su ccess ful return, as he swept all four motos of both classes in convincing fashion. "This four-stroke Yamaha is a blas t to rid e," said Drew . Th e secon d mota saw Ord elman in control by th e sta rt of the sec ond lap after Sleeter experienced track problems a nd Klin g dropped ou t with a clu tch failure. Ordelrnan, mean whil e, ope ned up a co mfo r ta b le lea d wh ile Bri an Riechel and Matt Armstrong were having a close race for second place.
