Upcoming Rounds: Rounds 13-14• South Haven, Michigan, Augus114-1 5 Round 15- Parl< City, Utah, September 18 M otocross AHRMAISpeed &S N poil ational VintageMX Series,Round8: M id-Ohio By Matt Benson LEXINGTON, OHIO, JULY11 ot only ha s Dav id Boyd stun of AMS Racing in Tempe, Arizona, ridden every round of the 1999 AHRMA/Speed & Sport National Vin- 1£ tage MX Series, bu t he's also wo n each a nd every moto in th e tou gh Classic 500cc Expert class. The 1967 Hu sqvarn a rider' s record in the Clas sic 250cc divisio n is much less impress ive - he's won "only" 14 of 16 motos. The Boydstun jug gern aut rolled on at Mid -Ohio , where th e more th an 400 entries were gr eeted by a fast but technical course designed by Dick Mann and laid out in the rolling infield area. Despi te judicio us wa tering , d us t was a bit of a problem . Then again, any temporary race course used by so man y motor cycles is likely to get dusty under a July sun. In both Classic 500cc mot os , Boyds tun h a d hi s 360cc Husky o u t front quic kly, leaving the handlebar-banging to eve ryo ne else. The opening moto saw Steve Tucker ge t the best of fellow BSA rid er Paul Havir, but trouble in the second moto d ropped Tucker to fifth overa ll, as H a vir ' s co nsis te nt 3-2 fi nishes earned h im second for th e d ay . Mi ke Z im me rman was th ir d overall o n h is BSA 441. Craig Campbell man handled his '65 Triu m p h 500 twin to a p air of In t er m ed ia te- d i v is ion w ins, w hile Husky fana tic Craig Como ntofski tu rn ed in 2-1 finishes to take the Novice hon ors. Classic 250cc Expert featu red much the same cas t of characters, with Boydst un agai n running off fro m the field . The closely matched Havir and Tucker, again on BSAs, took tu rns finishi ng seco n d, and it was Havi r ta kin g h ome anot her seco nd-place plaque. Ha d the cylinder on his 73 Honda 250cc Elsinore not loosened in the first Over 30 Expert rno to, Larry Witmer of Elkhart, Ind ia n a, mig h t ha ve bested Boydstun's day by wi nni ng three class es . As it was, WitfCler hamme red h is wa y to victory in the Expert div ision of Sportsman 250cc and Over 40 and third in Over 30. In the Sportsman and Ov er 40 classes, Maico 450- mou n ted John Deemer played runner-u p to Witmer's keep-it-pinned ridin g sty le. Witmer's 7-1 fini shes in Over 30 put him in third everall behind Don Lewis's 1-2 and Tom Bellarnv's 2-3. Als~ doubling on the day was Vintage Iron 's Rick Doughty, who wa s undefeated in Premier 500cc and Sportsman Open Twins Expert on a pair of gorgeous machines. The only pressure Doughty felt was in the second Premier moto, as Brad Kennard 's ' 64 BSA B40 hounded the BSA Gold Star-mounted Californian. Corky Root, riding another 840, earned second overall to Dou ghty with 2-3 finishes to Kennard's 4-2. Bob Frederick (Spo rtsman 50Dec and Over 30 Novice) and Wayne Rantz (Premier Lightweight and Sportsma n Open Tw ins Novice) were the d a y ' s o ther tw o-class win ners. . There was some excellen t racmg - and a good bit of racing's unpredictability in th e Ov er 50 In term ed iat e class. The first moto op ened With a battle for the lead between Mai co 450-mounted Gig Hamilton , Karl Papenhagen on a Pent on 400, and Kim Armstrong aboard a 440cc Maico. But then Chuck De Ran charged up to the lead with his Yamaha 360 and hung on to win over Hamilton, Papenhagen, and Lou Snedden on a BSA 850. De Ran didn't make mo to two. This tim e it was CZ 380 rider Don Mathys, (Above) Gig Hamilton gets the jump on the Over 50 Inte rmediate class in motocros s action. Hamilton went on to win. (Right) The Penton Owners Group organized a special Pentons-only moto at Mid-Ohio. • who wres tled th e w in a way fro m Ha mi lton, wit h Sne d den crossing the line in third after holding second for a tim e . Hamilton 's consis te ncy earned him the overa ll, ahead of Ma thys' 5-1 p la ci n gs, Sned d en's 4- 3 and Papen hagen' s fourth overall after 3-5 finis hes . Elmar Kruza and his Ossa Pha n tom emerged victo rious after close racing in . the "A" spli t of th e h uge Sp ortsman 250cc Inte rmedia te class . Ma rk Mackay rode his Hond a to the o peni ng-moto win, pursued by Ossa rid er Wesley Miller and Kruza. The seco nd race was a three-way, lead -swa p ping b a t tl e between Mill er, Kr u za a nd CZ racer Chris Richar d son . When the checkered flag waved, it was Kruza h old ing the coveted position ahead of Miller and Richardson - and tha t's how they ended up in the overall results as well.
