At this point it wa s close to 1 a.m., and a w eary bunch of racers and officials retired for the evening . . Th e first Group Two featu re to take place on Thursd ay afternoo n w as for the 600cc Modifi ed cl a s s , and Canada ' s Ro ya l Ad d erso n got the holes hot and checked out ea rly for his win. Joe Bromley also got a g reat s ta r t and cha sed Add ers on in to th e fi rst tu rn, but h e co u ld n' t s tay wi th the lead er and finis hed seco n d . Ja cob Johnson ra n in fourth place until late in the race, when he got by Bryan Smith a t the switch back to claim thi rd. Smith took fourth place. Hu saberg-moimted Kenny Noyes led th e 600cc Pro Sport pa ck into turn one, follow ed by Cory Roth. Joe Zydinski rode by two ri ders go ing in to th e chi can e to g ra b the thi rd spot. Tom McGrane Jr. go t by Zydinski late in the race to take o ver third . Du sty Fauld s th en go t by to m ove Zydins ki back to fifth. Henry Wi le s we n t fro m h is pol e starting position to the lead in the 250cc DTX fea ture and then sa w the red flag, as Steve Murray unloaded in the switchback. Wiles took the fro nt positio n in the single-filerestart an d again cha rged into the lead . Cory McDermitt go t th e lead bri efly, but Wiles took it ba ck and held o n for th e wi n. McDermitt go t se cond, and Co rey Ho rmes ca p tu red th e th ir d spot. Nex t up was the Over 40 Open class, and John Warren went wi re to wire for his win. Adderson got by Rod Lake on th e second lap to take over secorid and held the positi on to the finish lin e. Late in th e race, John Zw eri can also pa ssed Lake to take third. Lake was fou rth. , Gary Hite, one of the chargers on a Harley-Davidson XR750, bro ke a primary chain in th e Over 40 race and didn't start in th e Over 21 Open Twins feature. Ad derson led th e pack into turn one and again ch ecked out on the field . George Mack came home a distant second , followed by Nick Taylo r. Mike Butler , who spanked them 'in his heat race, d id it again in the Over 30 Open featu re. Butler got th e hol es ho t an d never loo ked back on his way to his . win. Joe Bromley finis hed second , fol lowed by Johnny Cooper in thi rd . The 500cc Modified fea tu re was won by Hen ry Wil es,.w ho go t a good start and went s traigh t to the fro nt. Jason Storms go t se cond, over Bromley, who passed Bryan Smith late in th e rac e to capture th e third spo t. The last race of the wee k at the India na Stat e Fairgrounds faci lity w as the 250cc Modified feature. Wiles, w ho had jus t won the 500cc Mo dified class , retu rn ed to the track to post a solid win in .this race. Storms again took second, followed by Tony Meiring in third. SHORT TRACK After th e Thursday TT program at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, the com- . pe titors moved about 85 mil es so u th east to t h e Law ren ce bur g Speedway a t Lawren ceburg, Indiana . The little 330ya rd ova l is familiar to many of the Midwestern competitors. The 85cc M od ified 02-15) fea ture o nce again began the Group One p ro ceedi ngs. W hen th e ligh twen t green, Nicky Cummings got th e holeshot and led the pack in to turn one. By the se cond lap, th e finishing order was set for the top five, with Cummings claiming ano ther win. Logan Myers chased him a cross th e lin e in secon d p la ce, with Devin Jesso p in third place. The next even t wa s .the 50cc Pee Wee feature. Robert Boulis got the holeshot and the initial lead , w hich he held for a la p before slidi ng in a turn. Th is ga~e th e lead to Bre tt Pu gh, w ho held it for sev eral laps unti l the lead ers got into the backmarkers and he was bal ked, all owing Candy Hil ey to ta ke over the lead. Pu gh took second, fo llo w ed by Keit h Bou lis in thi rd . Th e 65cc DTX feature was up next. Race Da vi s ju m ped into th e lea d and w ent th e d is tan ce fo r th e w in . Travis Myers chewed o n Davis for m ost of the race, and he got by Davis a few times, o nly to gi ve th e lead back in th e next corner. A t th e fi nis h it wa s Dav is , Myers, and b onnie Southers in third . Th e 50cc Junior (4-6) feature took to th e tr ack, with Ju stin Pitman 'getti ng a good st art befor e falling in turn tw o an d bringing out the red flag. On the restart, Dale Wakefield Jr. go t th e jump, th e lead ยท and the w in . Justin Pitman got second, and Ricky Foster too k the third spot. Nex t up was th e 85cc DTX featu re, and Jarred McWhirt er led from sta rt to finish d espite la te-ra ce pressure fro m Cummings, wh o took seco nd . Carter M yers go t th e th ird s pot . C o d y Humphrey and Devin Jessup ran strong in the early laps, but both slid off th e groove in to th e so ft stuff and m oved backw ard th rough the field . . There were 12 rid ers lined up for the 50cc Senior featu re. Evan Aronson go t the holeshot ; he ld off a brief cha lle nge from Rob b Lapeen a nd took th e lead until a rid er fell coming out of turn four, bringing ou t th e red flag and a restart. When the light went green again, Aronso n again took the lead an d held it to the end for his wi n. James Beac h took second, followed by Robb Lapeen in third . The 65cc Modified fea tu re wa s next, and John Lewis carried aw heelie d own in to turn one to tak e the lead . His lead only lasted a la p, as Ga ry Conklin we nt d o wn on the backs tre tc h a n d was trapped und er h is bike fo r a few seconds . Thi s brough t ou t the red flag and a com plete restart. Lewis again go t th e holesh ot and the lead, which he held to the finish. Sea n Jon es too k second, and Tr avis Mye rs was third. Trevo r Jes so p fell in turn fou r at th e halfwa y point, turning what had been a good race for him into a last-p lace finis h. The next event was the 125cc Modified feature , and th e first start lasted about five seconds, as Rya n Brothers . and Logan Myers tangled and ended up like a stack of pan cak es - ride r, mo torcycle, r id e r, m otorcy cl e . T hey we re unsta cked an d sent to th e th ird row for th e complet e resta rt. Loca l rid er Kr is Williamson got th e holeshot and went wi re to w ire to win the event. Second place w ent to Ma tt Bu r ton, and Cummings too k thi rd . In the 85cc Modified (7-11 ) feat u re , Clayton Rigg le got the holeshot and led the firs t lap, only to see a red flag as the officials decided it hadn't been a clean start. Carter My ers got the holes ho t on th e second start and led all the way to the chec kered flag . Joh n Lewis took seco nd lat e in the race, m oving Cod y Humphrey ba ck to third . The last Group One event was th e 250cc Pro Sport feature. Cory Rot h go t the hol esh o t and the ea rly lead . Brian Vincent was close to the front when he and ano ther rid er ta ngled hand leba rs, slowi ng them down and allowing se veral riders to get by . Shawn Raggio held down third pla ce until the seventh lap, when he fell and let most of th e field go by. Vincent also went down on th e last lap, moving him to the rea r of the finish . order. Roth was firs t, followed by Dusty Fau lds and Joe Zyd insky. At this point, the Group One events were over. Many of th e tea ms m oved fro m the p its to th e pa rki ng area , makin g room fo r th e Group Two com petitors. Group Two hea ts and sem is we re run as qu ickl y as p oss ibl e due to the threat of an a pproaching storm system . In the 600cc Modified featu re, Sha ne Fox got the best s tart and led the pack out o nto the backstretch. His lead only lasted about a lap ash e slid off th e g roo ve, letting Phil Wolf and Tony Meiring get by. Fox recover ed in third . pla ce and , a lap lat er , somebody charged into Wolf, hit his rear tire, got stood up' and high-sided , bringing o u t the red flag . On the 'res tart, Wolf again got the lead, but this p a rt of the race came to a halt a lap later as Joe Bromley and Timmy Mitc he ll went d own, br ingin g o ut . a no t h e r r ed fl a g . ' A no t he r restart , and Wolf again cha rge d in to the lead, fo llowed b y To ny M eiring an d Scoo ter Vernon. Th e race ran to its completion, with Wolf, Meiring an d Vernon finishing in tha t order. The next race was the 600cc Pro Sport feature and the field was brought to the line and then sent back to the pits d ue to th e rapidly approaching storm. This was a good d ecision, as all the riders got a ch ance to seek shel ter instead of bein g caughi out o n th e track. T he s to r m arrived a few minutes later and put an end to Friday's activi ties . Saturday morning, H ers chel Benkert, Lawren ceburg's racer /promoter, p ulled off a m ino r m ira cle as he reclaimed and regroo med a very we t race track. There w er e u nusable areas in the pits due to standing water, but the track was ready to go at noon. The feature-qualified riders got a practice session, and the 600cc Pro Sport clas s came to the line at about 1:30 p.m. Tony Meiring salutes after riding to the 250cc DTX win on the half mile at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, When the li gh t went g re en , local racer Nick Hummel go t th e holesh ot and the ini tial lead, only to give it up a lap later as he overcooked a comer and slid off th e groove, ha nding the lead to Co ry Rot h . A la p later, Hummel w ent wide again, lettin g two more rider s by. On the next lap he slid down and everyone went by . This brought ou t the 'red flag and a single-file restart. By this time the field was set , and the firs t three riders on the restart were the first three finishers: Rot h , Jacob Latimer and Tom McGrane Jr. Nex t u p was the 250cc DTX featu re, and Co ry Mc Dermi tt led the pack ou t onto the backs tretch, ho ldi ng the lea d to the ha lfway p o int , w here h e m ade a small bobble and let To ny Meiring ge t by. Meiring he ld the lead to the checkere d fla g, foll o w ed by McDermitt and Co rey Holm es. The next featu re was the Over 40 O pen cl ass . Missi ng from ' the li neup we re Royal Adderson an d Gary Hi te, as bo th racers had a Saturday night commitment at another track. At the start" John Warren w heelied his wav in to turn one to take th e lead, which he held to the finish. Rick Reed took second, wi th Da n Weicht cla iming the third spot. In the 250cc Modified fea tu re, Jarred Mees go t the ini tial lea d and held it till th e second la p, when H enry Wiles go t high-sided in tum two an d Bryan Smith, w it h no p lace to go, went over Wile s' bike and crashed. This brought out the red flag, and a single-file res tart fol lo wed . O n the restart, Mees again took the lead, which he held to the last lap, when Robert Pearson got by for the win.
