But I didn't kn ow if he co ul d ge t up fro nt qu ick eno ug h, and when I saw 'Criville' with 15 or wha tever laps to go , it's just the wrong guy I wanted back th er e. I can handl e Barros and th em kind of guys that bra ke very deep and can 't accelera te, bu t Alex ... I knew it' d be hard to stay w ith him or eve n pass him." Halfway in, on the 16th of 31 laps, the top four - Roberts, Criville, Kocinski and Abe - were cove red by .945 of a second, with Checa just .651 back. "About 10 laps from the end , I went into the second corner and the rear cam e completely around and almost highs id e d me, and it wa s o ff- th ro tt le ," Kocinski said. " It started popping and chattering and popping. It felt like it had a bubble in it. I had to hang off the bike and keep it straight up and down, otherwise it would high-side me." Checa mad e a run at Abe at the end, bu t the Japanese rider held him off and was happy to be on the podium. "O n the last lap , Checa was trying to pass, because he want ed to go to podium, bu t I wanted to go to po dium, so bi g fig h t," Abe sa id. "50 fin all y I ge t pod ium." Criville had seen Biaggi, Barros and Cadalo ra crash, and he d idn' t want to join them. "Each time, they fell right in front of me, " Griville said. "If this race had been the one to decide the championship, I wo u ld ha ve taken more risks. But with five wins und er my belt th is season already, I don't feel like I have to prove that I am capable of "inning." Six th went to Haruchika Aoki in a comfortable slot in front of fellow Japan-. ese rider Tetsuya Hara da . More had bee n expected from Harada and th e nimble Aprilia V-twin. bu t he never go t going - no t in pr actice, and not in the race.
