Webb catches KB MX win By Bret Eckert SACRA.\lENTO, CA, MAY 2B C ar m ichael Honda-spo ns o red Lou is Webb topped a talented field of riders to claim the 250cr Beginner-class victory d uring round three of KB Racin g' s Spring Motocros s Se rie s. Webb used consist ent starts and strong finishes en route to his first-ever overall win at a KB mo tocros s. The rac e marked th e midwa y po int of th e Rancho MC /Racers Pit Shop /MC Concepts / Rose ville Cycle-sponsored North ern California Spring Motocross Series , and wi th three rou nds remaining. titles are definitely up for grabs. Moto one of the 250cc Beginner class began with a full ga te of riders charging off toward the l BO-d egree, hard -left first tum. Fair field Cycle Center-backed Honda rider Frank Chavez led the way ou t first, with Jared Washaba ugh, Webb an d Joh n Hat field close behin d . As they made their way a ro und th e jump-infes ted KB circuit, Cha vez and Washa b a u gh. o n a Gu ts / Facto ry Grip Suzuki, established th e pace, w hile Webb and MC Co ncepts-sponsored Ha tfield kep t up th e pre ssure . O n lap t w o t he re were so me changes and some up-a nd-coming riders drawing the cro wd's a tten tion. Wash ab augh we nt d ow n , re mounting in eigh th after ha nding seco nd place to Webb . Also blas ting closer to the front were Shad Evans an d Jim Brooks, who completed the first la p in fifth and seve nt h, respecti vely. Evans had the throttle p in ned , a dvanci ng hi s KX250 to th ird a t the completion of the seco nd lap, wit h Broo ks, on a Cycle Gear-backed Yamaha, following in fourth. Webb, on a Hond a. kept the pressu re intense on Chavez, who fina lly buckled a nd fell ba ck to sixth on lap three, handing over the lead posi tion. Every one seemed content wi th th eir po sition s, and there wa s no further ad vancem ent during the moto. Webb wh ipped it at the finish , taking the chec kered flag first, wi th Evan s second, Brooks third and Hatfield fourt h. The second and deciding moto started without a hitch as Hatfield snared the holeshot this time aro und , wi th Webb up fron t again in the number - two spot. Roundin g o ut the top five spo ts were Evan s, Grass Valley':" Mike Alexa nder, and Chavez. On the second lap , Chavez, not u sed to a mid p a ck s ta r t, m o tore d a ro und Al e xand er to tak e ove r four t h . We bb p u t a wh eel in on Hat field for the lead but had the door shu t on him every time by the Kawasaki rider in front . Chav ez was the ride r to keep tabs of this mot o, and he pushed Eva ns back a posi tion on the ne xt lap . The laps and the KB layo ut took their toll on the riders a nd, as in the first moto, there were no mor e chan ges in the later laps. Hatfield rod e acr oss the finish line uncontes ted in first. Webb finished wit h a so lid sec ond . Chavez ended the night with a good showing in thi rd . Evans cla imed fourth, an d Bobby Infault sq ueaked acros s- in fifth, ahea d of Brooks. Webb 's consisten t 1 ~2 mot o wins and ultrasm oo th rid ing sty le ea rne d th e ov er all for the night , and Hatfield's 4-1 finishes were good for second. Evans' 2-4 placing garnered him a solid third , w hi le Chavez went a wa y with fo u r th ove rall poi nts over Brooks in fifth. With three rounds in the books in this best·five-of·six-races Sp ring Se r ies , so me of the co ntende rs in a ll classes are rising to the top . The next three races will de finitely bt" exciting, as riders try to earn the most poin ts and secure a top Series finish and reap the rewards of contingency prizes provided by the series s po n ~ors .
