from Aurora, Illinois, took top honors in
the 250cc A class but not before crashing
and having to work his wa y up through
the pack.
"I came off the line in about fourth,"
Shafer said. "Then, in the second lap, I
wen t over the ha ndlebars in the sand
pits - that dropped me to sixth. Then I
just kep t picking away, trying not to do
anythi ng stupi d . [ ca ught a nd passed
(Phil) Con ver se (w ho was lea ding) on
the las t la p. He had a flat tire."

"I must ' ve hit a rock or so me thing ,
because the tire w as going fla t durin g
the first lap," Conver se said . "Bu t when
I wen t through th e scoring s ta tio n on
the la st la p a nd looked d o w n a t th e
whee l, I thou ght, 'Aw hell, it (the tire) is
coming off the rim .' 1 d idn' t lose it completely until about a mile or so from the
end. So I just rod e it on the rim. He y, we
go t more rims, right?"

Ryan Moss aced the 200cc A clas s on
his Yamaha . Moss was d own 1:19 and in
third place a t the end of the firs t loop,
but his second-loo p time im proved sign ifican tly, putting h im in a s hooto u t
w ith leader Robbie Zim merman. Mo ss
picked up his pace eve n more and Zimmerman sim ply cou ld not answer back .

Jack Shoa lmi re hard ly wor ked up a
sweat as he aced the Super Senio r class
to add to his poin ts lead .
