reported . " I didn't ride as we ll as I · could." It was a far cry from the Tonopah 300, when he rode well all day to get second overall by himself. " Yea h, it was a lot different (than sol oing at Tonopah)," he said. "Th e second time I got on the bike was the only section I rode really well. I wish the race was a lot longer . Dave said he had the same thi ng, though , so we'll work together, a nd a t the nex t one we'll be ready." Th e d efending ra ce ch a m pio n, Campbell, would not repeat his solo victory of '98, though it w asn't for la ck of effo rt . Th e fourth bi ke off the line, he quickly moved pa st th e Ero n Bo yer / Matt Burroughs Husk y TE 610 for third before pit o ne. Wh en Zitterkopf dropped out, Campbell found him se lf in se co nd overall but with li ttle roo m to spare and the lead ers slowly but steadily drawi ng away. Thus, he mad e the decis ion to forego the schedu led tire change at pi t three. "It would've been close if I'd changed it and tried to ge t out ahead of the next bike, so I opted not to do it," he sai d . " It might 've cost m e, s i n ce I crashed (later). I might'v e been be tter off if I had new tires. About 10 or 12 miles pa st th e Caliente pit, in a sand wash, I ca me aro und a comer in th e trees a nd just clip ped a boulder that wa s rolling; th ere wa s a co u p le of them th e re. The bike wa s laying there a couple minutes, so it took a while to start . "O vera ll, I'm pretty happy . Ondas and Shane, they pu t in a good ride. Ever since I got going from th e crash, they were right behind me the whole w ay. They pushed me a nd pushed m e and pushed me. I don't kn ow if I wo uld've gone that fast if they hadn't pushed me like that. I had to let 'em go the last 15 miles here ; I blew a couple comers, and .it was like, there was no sense (in trying to ho ld th em ofo because they started tw o min u tes b eh in d m e (a nd were a head o n co rrec ted time anywa y ). I wo uld've ha d to mak e u p two minutes in 15 miles, and 1 di dn't make it (u p) in over 150 (to there), so I decided they earned it." . As good as the racing was up front among the Open Pros , it wa s better Brieflv.·.. - (Right) Unlike last yea r, J ohnny Campbe ll didn't solo his way to the win at the Sliver State 300. Here, he holds off David Onclas about 46 miles from the finish, physica lly running second but third on corrected time where he'd finis h. Ondas passed him before the end to finish second phys ically as well. (Above) After battl ing through all the 250s and most of the Open Pros , Over 30 Pros Mike Healey (sh own) and Larry Roeseler earned fourth overa ll with their 6:17:15 time. As the y'd started fifth in class, it didn't really matter if they beat their com petitors to the finish, but Healey wanted to anyway. Chasing Baxter, Healey chose a wide-o pen, fourth-gear sweeper in the final section where he pinned it sideways, looked o ver and waved as he neatl y sw e p t pa st the stu nned Yamaha rid er. The Kawasaki racers ended up fourth overall for their efforts in 6:17:15, which was just four seconds faster than Garrahan and Pearson, though the y were physically furth er back. Pearson actua lly diced with Bostrom coming int o the finish , and both reported having a great lime d oin g so.
