The 29th Old -Time Newsies chari ty event for muscular d ystrophy an d the Big Brot hers and Big Sisters of Dayton was do minated by Roeder for the seven th time. The race wa s the second event in the Triple Header Cha rity Weekend . O n Friday nig ht, Dayton ho sted a bike show and da nce o n the court squa re . Sunda y capp ed off the weeke nd w ith the 28th an n ual motorcycle ride for m us cula r dystrophy . The $1.8 milli on raised for chari ty over the years is a testament to the tireless work of ma ny peo ple in the mot orcycle industry, spea rhea ded by KK Supply. "Th ere is a lo t of race tracks that guys d on't use . Three and four are easier than one a nd tw o. There is ju st o ne line off of tw o." Hot Shoe series poi nt leader Will Davis finis hed seco nd to Roed er in the fir st hea t. Dan Butler, Kevin Va rnes and Gary Rogers follow ed Roed er and Dav is. Morehead took con trol of the second heat after d ispo sing of Steve Beattie and Chris Evans . Beattie's chance of beating Roed er took a blow w hen a clam p hold ing o ne of the carburetors broke. "1 though t, 'Man, I am not go ing to make the ma in ,"" sa ida d isappointed Bea tti e . " I just pushed the carb back on and held it with my leg." Beatti e recover ed quick ly e no ugh to finish four th, behi nd Eva ns a nd Dave Rayb urn. The hand writing was already on the wa ll, as Roeder's hea t-ra ce time was mo re tha n five seconds faster than Morehead 's. Waterford, Michigan's Dan Butler led the lOman 750cc Expert field in to turn o ne a t the sta rt of the ma in. Butler, Morehead a nd Chris Evan s ba ttled the trac k and each other for p osit io n . Bu tle r fell in th e difficu lt tu rn tw o, w h ich left Moreh ead a nd Evans to fig h t ove r second place. Evans took con trol of the seco nd spot, thou gh not withou t pa ying a price. "In 1981, 1 fell a t Hamburg, New York, and was pa ralyzed for two w ee ks," said Evans. , I " recover ed , but th e vertebra injury in m y neck causes m y right arm to cra mp. Tonight I cou ld get in to the com er as hard as Roeder, bu t I had trouble turning the bike," Beattie recovered fro m a second-row start to finish fourth, in front of Kevin Varn es and Will Da vis. Roede r beamed as he collected the $6000 in conti ngency . "Wh en I was yo u ng and w ild , I co u ld n' t w in," said Roed er . " I have to pa ce m yself to win, I would really like to finish off the Triple Crow n wi th wins at Lima and Eldora." Johnny Isaacs co ntin ued his dominance in th e Pro 600cc class, sliding his 500cc Yamaha across the rip pled day track out in fro nt in both his heat races a nd the main. Isaacs did enco u nter some challenges, how ever, as the race w as s topped when his closest pu rsu ers, Scott Raine and Roge r Sterling , cam e together o n the back s tretch, se nding Sterli ng to th e g ro u nd o ff tu rn two. Fortunately , Sterling wa s able to walk off the track after the incident and a long delay, w hich in this case included an accid ent repo rt made to the co un ty sheriff at the sce ne . Wh en the race was restarted with a single-file sta rt, Isaacs agai n made his wa y into the lead, with John Jeffries, Ricky Piscel and Blane Fo re in hot p urs u it. Isa a cs hel d h is g ro u nd, thoug h, as Todd Ra tli ff took adva nta ge of t he du e ls in fron t of h im a nd made a mo ve into fou rth, passing Fiscel after havin g worked his way up from eighth in the early going. On lap sev en of the eig ht -lap contest, Fore w as ab le to pres s his cha rge past Jeffr ies in to seco nd a nd then hold on until the race came to an end. Jeffrie s, Ratliff and Raine filled ou t the top five spots in this thri ller.
