Burke soon disposed of Saen z. leaving no doubt th a t he was t he fastest man on the track. After Burke pressu red Alba ch for more than a lap, Albach crac ked , allowing Burke to slide his Hond a into the lead and com plete his cha rge to the front of the pack. The race was not finished, however. a nd Albach managed to get back arou nd BU1'ke, but only for a mo ment, as Burk e, wi th mor e mom entu m, resum ed the lead and charged on to the checkered flag . Second in the moto wen t to Albach , - who was closely followed by Fichtelman across the finish line. As the pack revved their engin es in anticipa tion of the drop of the gate for the second moto , it was evident that Burke was the favorit e to pick up the win, but Saenz was the quickest with the clutch and he p ulled another hcleshot out of the bag . This time , however, Burke was in seco nd from the get-go, and he was not abou t to give up. Burke was followed by Fichtelman and Albach. The race was som ew hat mon otonous until the end of the t hir d lap, when the pa ck of rid er s crested The Ledge . The first two riders were the sa me, bu t FichteIma n had been booted back to sixth after being passed by Albach, Sievers and Jeff Morrow. Burke, how ever, could not manage a pass on Saenz. Later in the mo te, lap ped traffic finally enabled Burke to ma ke the pass on Saenz with two laps to go. Meanwh ile, Albach crashed and relinqui shed his third position to Morrow, who was still hold ing Sievers a t bay. After surviving a late-race cha rge by Saenz, Burke went on to victory . Saenz finished second , followed by a di stant battle for third be tween Mor row and Sievers, wh ich was won by Morro w . Mote one saw the KX of Bill Boum an rip off a textbook holesh ol. In tow were Don Hu d d les to n, Ro n ald Wutzke a n d T reen. Bo u m an showed the rest of the field the fast way around LACR as he took th e w ir e-to-w ir e. vic to ry in grand fashion. Behind Bouma n, a ba ttle ensued bet w een Huddleston a nd h ar d -ch ar g in g YZ pilot Treen . The du o wen t at it for seve ral laps, w ith Treen taking second place over Hu dd leston at the checkers. Inthe back of the pack, YZ-mo unted Marie McM"illen was on the gas and houn d ing Conrad Stall for sixth place. McMillen pu lled out all the stops , blazing past Stall to secur e sixth at the finish. Moto two was again an action-p acked fun fest, as Treen grabbed the holeshct down the fast straightawa y. Dave Renn e r g av e ch ase . Renn er shad owed Treen for three la ps before seizing the lead position with a beau tiful pass thro ugh the di fficult Whoop section. Once in the lead , Renn er never looked back en rout e to victory . Once again a fierce battle ensued in the back en of the pack. This time it was betwe Pro-Valvebacked Vickie Henn and Dean Townsend . The two ride rs trad ed posi tions several times ; then Tow nsend go t serious and p ut a vicious blockpass on Henn to secure eigh th at the checkers . In the hotly contested Beginner class, it was Brandon Du d ley top pi n g th e 33-rid er field , going 2-1 on the day for the overa ll victory . In mota one, Billy McAlliste r took the holesho t on a borrowed RM. Giving chase wer e 32 ride rs, inclu d ing Dan Martin, Vincen t Daly, Ni ck DaIley and Dud ley. McAlliste r, feeling comfortable on the borrowed machine, was even d earing the large d ouble und er the brid ge. McAlli ster left the field behind to take the victory un con tested . The man on th e move was Dudl ey , who was equall y impressive, clearin g the same double on a 125cc', Dudley sl iced through t he fie ld to secure second . Dalley also rod e well. holdi ng on to third . With the ga te full in moto two, a good start was ex tre me ly im po rta nt. With the overall u p for gra bs, Dudley ou tcla ssed the com pe titio n, takin g the long, sandy holeshot on a 125. Mean wh ile, McAllister was buri e in the pack. McAld lister put in an im press ive ride, working his ~ay up to third at the checkers. Taking second in the mo to an d third overa ll o n the d a y was Eric Giro ux . Olson jimmies twin REM Glen Helen MX wins By Rocky Hash SAN BERNARDINO CA,JUNE 5 , H a ving w on mu ltiple mot ocr os s Vet Wo rld Cham pionships, win ning races is nothing new for Alan Olson. It was business as usual w hen he han d ily sto le away both moto s of Over 50 Masters competition du rin g round five of Racing Enterprises Motorsp orts ' Glen Helen Saturday Spring Series . Wh en the racers lined up for the first goaround , it wa s Y400-rnounted Bengt Johansson snagging the ho les hot . Olson ma neuvered his YZ250 into second, while Hors t Leitner ran third . . The top five po sitions we re fiUed out by [o dy Weisel and then Ch uck Minert aboard his thumping YZ400. Olson wasted no time, and he made the pass on Joha nsson just . .as the racer s ca me through the sco ring sec tion for the first time. Once in the lead , Olson immediately blasted ou t a five-seco nd cus hio n for himself. Joha nsson and Leitner bega n to squabble over the second spo t as the two riders raced side by side for two laps . One ride r on the move was Suzuki -mo unted Marino Bastionell. The RM250 pilot raced all the wa y u p to the fourth posi tion by the half wa y mark in the mot o after ga ting d ead last. Out front. Olson was relen tless, and he continued to pull aw ay from the pack as the mot o wore on. Bastion ell continued to charge forw ar d, and by the time the race had on ly two mor e lap s to go, he was right on the duo of Johansson and Leitner. who we re still d icing it up . Bastionell was methodical as he picked off first Leitner an d then Joh a nsson just after th e w hite flag was given. When the checkered flag came out , Olson was the first to see it. Bastione ll completed his fantastic rid e in the runner- up positi on, wh ile Johans son rod e in third . Weisel and CR250 rid er Denn is McAdam filled ou t the top five. As the second mota left the line. it was Tom Whi te d ropp ing the hammer on his KX250 to nail th e holeshot . Johansson , alwa ys a strong starter, slid into second, whi le Bastionell ga ted mu ch better this time and ran third . Olson jockeyed into the fourth position, and Geo rge Spearin g scoo ted his KX250 int o fift h. As the pac k negot iated the second circu it, Olson showed he was head and shoulde rs above the competition, as he wen t from fourth to firs t on one lap . Once in the lead , Olson soon distanced himself some 10 seco nds in fro n t of seco nd - p laced ri de r White. Johans son and Bastionell were locked u p in a battle for third and fourth . Whit e held comfortably in second, as he was able to put abou t five seco nds' worth of space bet ween himself and the Johansson /Bastionel1skirmish. As the contest wore on, Johansson refused to giv e in to the rep ea ted pass a ttemp ts of Bastione ll. When the checkers carne out at the end of the mota , it was Olso n coasting in for another mot o wi n. Wh ite follo we d him in for seco nd place, while Johansson won the battle for th ird . Bastionel1 se ttled for fourth, and Leitner rode in to fill ou t the top five. On the d ay, the ove rall victory went to Olso n by vi rtue of his p er fect 1-1 rid es . Joh anss on earned the runner -u p spot with his 3-3 sco res, while Baslionell was third with his 2-4 tally. Fisher kingfish of Madras DT By Clay Light MADRAS,OR, JUNE5 Rex Fisher was the kingfis h for a day in the High Desert country of Oreg on, nettin g an imp ressive win in the 600cc Expert ma in even t on the quar ter-mile oval at the Madras Speedway. The event doubled as the Oregon State Championship and round five of the AMA Distr ict 27-san ctioned Northwest Dealer's Challenge Series. Fishe r, who missed most of the 1998 season du e to injur ies, won the first of two 600cc Expert preliminaries , th en s to rmed back to win th e Exp ert Da sh For Cash . Fis her fi na liz ed his evening of domina nce by han d ily w inning the 20-lap Exp ert main eve nt to join Washing ton 's Ku rt Ha wk in the Professional -class winner's circle. H aw k mad e a sw eep of the 600cc Pro Sport class by also w inn ing h is qu alifier , the Dash For Cash a nd the 15-lap Pro Sport main event. There wer e four two -class winner s, includ ing Pro Spo rt w inner Hawk, who wa s a lso imp ressive with an Open A main win. Nick Sellers won the 250cc A and DTX race, and his fellow Washingtonian Nick Og he won the BOcc A and 80 Beginner race. Chris Celorie picked u p wins in the 60cc and 80c( A even ts. Simo nse n carved th roug h traffic a t a.stellar pace, but the rider from Cas tle Rock, Wash ington , was un able to mount a not her of his pa ten ted come- fro mbehin d victo ries, and Fish er bre ezed to a wi n. Ano ther rid er on the move was Jeff Annen, who overcame a poor start and moved Fitzh ugh and Anderson back ano ther position to earn himself third, a hea d of Fitzhu gh, An de rs on a nd Oregon's Beau A. Brown. It was of little surp rise wh en Hawk soa red to ;'j wire-to-wire win in the 600cc Pro Sport class, but it was a bit of a .surp rise wh en Troy Renfro, a newcome r to the class, ra n a solid second to Ha wk from the get-go . It wa s Renfro 's ca ree rbest finish . The battle for third went to the wire, as Washingtonian Brian McGonigal overtook Beau Z. Brown a t the finish line to lead Brown , George Prindiville, Matt Schweitzer and Fra nk Parke r acros s. Another closely contest ed race was the Over 40 A ma in. AMA District 27 Over 40 class cham pion Vince Holt narrowl y left cen tra l Oregon with a class win , ed ging former AMA Expert Jim Monagen at the finish line. . "Th a t was so close," said Holt.
