In doi ng so, they hope to raise $100,000 for the Americ an Red Cross and draw attentio n to the organizati on's relief efforts in South America, especially for the victims of the hu rricanes that rava ged the people of Cen tral America last summer. "This rid e started out as a simple adve n ture," Sturgis, a recent graduat e of Pepperd ine University, 'said. "We have all taken it upon ourselves to try and mak e a d ifference in the lives of the people that we will be visiting." With their 6.1-gallon fuel tan ks, wide seats, and fairings and hand gu ards for protection, and their rugged d epend ability, the du al-pu rpose-orien ted KLR650s should prove to be more than compe tent for the task at hand . ' "Kawasaki is deli ghted that Search The Earth chose our KLR650 for this exped ition; its adve nture- touring capabilities are well-established," Kaw asaki motorcycle division vice president of mark eting and prod uct management Bob Moffit said. It also donated 60 electrical generators to relief efforts, with one-third of those going to the Red Cross.
