Yamaha Dealer Series, Round 2 holeshot turn in seventh.. Charging hard in laps two and .three, Buttrell passed four riders, induding Paluzzi and Wondelleck, to put himself in second. Jason Meadows followed Buttrell's lead, claiming third. Time ran out for Buttrell and he was unable to catch up to Roberts. Roberts crossed the finish line in first, followed by overall winner Buttrell, Meadows and Wondelleck. Noleen/John Burr Cycles-backed Roberts was pleased with his win. "The track's pretty rough," he said, "but I got through it." "I had a bad start, then everyone crashed in the second corner in the sand," said Buttrell of his ride. "1 guess everyone was tired in the second mota, and I just worked my way up." _ By Beth and Bob laRock 50 SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 6 weeping the second round of Glen • Helen Raceway's Yamaha Dealers' Series' 125cc Pro class with 1-1 wins, Danny Carlson proved to race fans that he is back and ready to race. ' Carlson has spent the last three months recuperating from an injury sustained while competing in the AMA Supercross Series. Temecula Motors/ Arnette/lMSsponsored Carlson charged hard off the start of the combined 125cc Pro and 125cc Intermediate gate to capture the holeshot in the first mota after stuffing lntermediate Sean O'Conner in the turn. Pro rider Jason Abbott and lntermediate Cory Gibbons followed in positions two and three. Carlson developed an 18-secand lead over Abbott by the end of lap three. Abbott held the number-two position comfortably throughout the mota. John Burr Cycles' O'Conner, not to be dissuaded, attacked the track and charged hard after teammate Gibbons for third. Gibbons and O'Conner appeared to be joined back tire to front for most of the mota, taking many turns in synchronized rhythm. Gibbons held O'Conner off until the white-flag lap, when O'Conner sneaked around Gibbons for the lntermediate-class win. Carlson, meanwhile, held a substantial lead over second-place Pro Jason Abbott to the finish. O'Conner came back strong in the secane mota, capturing the holeshot and holding the lead for most of the first lap. In hot pursuit were Carlson and Intermediate Jeremiah Moore. Carlson passed O'Conner at the end of lap one and rode his own race to the finish. O'Conner and Moore competed for second on laps two through five until Moore literally hit the wall and flipped over his bike. Crossing the finish line one-two were Carlson and O'Conner, both riders taking first overall in their classes. Matt Goldsmith led the huge pack of 38 racers at the start of the first mota of the 125cc Beginners. Mike Paluzzi, Robert Lord and Scott Buttrell pursued. During the first lap, Goldsmith lengthened his lead. Meanwhile, Buttrell passed Lord and Paluzzi for second. Lord fell off the pace, allowing Paluzzi, Jeremy Roberts and Nils Berge into positions three through five. After passing Roberts in lap three, Berge charged hard and took advantage of a small mistake made by Paluzzi, passing Paluzzi on the podium uphill. Buttrell continued to close the distance to leader Goldsmith, finally catching-him during the white-flag lap. The two racers were bar to bar coming down the hill before the finishline turn. Buttrell appeared to have th~ win until Goldsmith bumped him, throwing Buttrell off balance in the final turn. Goldsmith crossed the finish line a hair in front of Buttrell. Berge finished third, followed by Roberts and Paluzzi. "No hard feelings," said Noleen/ Thor/John Burr Cycle-backed Buttrell about the contact. "That's racing." Roberts took control of the second mota, with Jason Wondelleck and Paluzzi in pursuit. Buttrell again had a tough start, coming tHrough the Glen Helen Raceway Park San Bernardino, California Results: June 6, 1999 (Round 2) PIW (0-6), 1. Shoun Caudill (Lem). P/W (7-8): I.
