Round 3: Bushkill Valley Me AMA NA TlONAL CHAMPIONSHIP HILLCLIMB SERIES By David and Lora Patton FREEMANSBURG, PA.jUNE 13 F ive-time 540cc champion Paul Pinsonnault and 800cc rider Bobby Templeton were the men to beat when the AMA National Championship Hillclimb Series made its third stop of the season at the Bushkill Valley Motorcycle Club's grounds. Pinsonnault the early pace in the 540cc class and then put in a perfect second ride to edge points leader John Han'lilton Jr., who seemed to have the win locked up after his second attempt propelled him into the lead. Ted Wilkins continued his string of top-five finishes, with a thirdplace finish ahead of Pennsylvania riders Mike. Livingston and Phil Libhart. In the 800cc class, the BSA-mounted Terry Thompson led early, followed by Tim Frazier. But Templeton, witmer of round one of the series, blasted past them both on his second ,ride to snatch his second win of . the year. Thomp on and Frazier rounded out the top three, with Frazier taking the series. points lead in the class. Lou Gerencer took fourth, with Bob Castledine claiming fifth on the series' tallest hill. 540cc Pinsonnault was the first rider to challenge the narrow, 550-foot-long hill, which features a small mound before the first of three kickers that must be hit straight for a fast time. Pinsonnault dropped the hammer on his nitro-burning Honda CR500 and blasted over the camel hump. He has always excelled over jumps, and he flew low and Jast over the three kickers all the way past the lights at the 5
