John Hamilton Jr. (Tri) was second in the 540cc class, and Ted Wilkins (Rtx) was third. In the 800cc class, Terry Thompson (BSA) was second, and Tim Frazier (H-D) was third. Geo Roeder II (H-D) and Bret Beyer (Rtx) each grabbed a win at round six of the AMA Hot Shoe National Series on the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Dayton, Ohio, on June 5. Roeder won the 750cc Expert fea ture; with Chris Evans (H-D) finishing second and Steve Morehead (H-D) third. Beyer beat Dan Stanley (Rtx) and Shawn Clark (H-D) for top honors in the 600cc Expert feature. Jeff Williams (Kaw) won his first-ever Toyota Canada Superbike race with a win over Michael Taylor (Kaw) and Benoit Pilon (Yam) at Race City MotorSPOftS Park in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on June 13. The .600cc Sport Bike-class win went to Owen Weichel (Suz). Lonnie Pauley (W-R) topped Steve Mayfie!d (W-R) and Jesse Sanchez (WR) to win the Open class at the West Coast Flat Track Series event at Perris Auto Speedway in Perris, California, on June 12. Jeff Johnson (Tri) won the Open Vintage class after topping Rob Cobb (Yam) and Rick Reed (Tri). Our sources in Europe report that Mickael Pichon has signed with Suzuki and will race the last four rounds of the FlM World Championship 250cc Motocross Series. Pichon, who was recently released from Team Honda in the United States, is said to have full factory backing .and is expected to compete at the Budds Creek (Maryland) GP on September 12. The 38year-old Brown, from Woodland Hills, California, was performing at the Extreme Freestyle Motorcycle Air Jumping event at Magic Valley Speedway when he came up short and slammed into the back of the trailers. Brown suffered a severed leg in the accident, as well as life-threatening internal injuries. World 250cc Motocross Championship leaderboard after overalling the Italian 250cc Grand Prix, held at Maggiora, Italy, on June 13. Beirer claimed 1-2 results for the overall and is now six points ahead of his next rival. Fellow Winfield Kawasaki rider (and series points leader going into the ltalian GP) Marnicq Bervoets finished fourth overall with 2-8 results and dropped to second place in the series. Radson Honda's Ryan Hughes was fast in Italy but bad starts cost the American. Hughes claimed 3-5 results for third overall, behind Beirer and Frencl1 Yamaha rider David Vuillemin, who tallied 4-1 results after suffering mecl1anical problems in the first moto. The 250cc points table now shows Beirer leading the way with 231 points, followed by Bervoets With 226, Rad on Honda's Frederic Bolley with 188, Hughes with 184 and Vuillemin with 177. Elsewhere, Husqvarna's Alessio Chiodi won his sixth overall of the year in the World 125cc Motocross Championships, winning both motos at the 125cc Grand Prix in Agueda, Portugal, on June 13. Chiodi again had no problems with his rivals;although American Jeff Dement did lead the first moto of the day before Chiodi passed him and went on to win. Dement ended up finishing second in the moto but scored zero pomts in the second moto. Second in Portugal was Yamaha-mounted Eric Camerlengo, .with Great Britain's James Dobb taking third place. Dement's second-place finish in, the first moto was good enough to give him sixth overall, one position better than fellow American Mike Brown. Brown had problems in the first moto, coming away with zero points, but he came back to finish third in the second moto. Chiodi extends his series lead to 245 points, followed by Claudio Federici with 223, Mike Brown with 160 and Dobb ~th 125. Dement is seventh with 89 points. KTM-mounted rider Peter Johansson won his second overall of the year in the German 500cc Motocross GP on June 13. Johansson, who claimed no points in the previous GP, was in top form in Germany, leading home French rider Yves Demma (3-2) and defending champ Joel Smets (4-1), in that order. The 500cc championship series is led by Italian Yamaha rider Andrea Bartolini with 180 points, followed by Demaria with 145, Smets with 128, Johansson with 108 and Alex Puzar with 107. American Trampas Parker is seventh with 86 points. G The Southwest Vintage Racing Group will be hosting the 1999 CZ Championships during its previously scheduled July 25 meet at Carlsbad Raceway in Carlsbad, California. There will be Stock and Modified, and Amateur and Expert classes, including an Open Gran Prix class open to all CZ-powered bikes. Stock classes must conform to vintage rules for wheel travel. Women's Motocross Schools will be offering private or group classes for women riders beginning June 21 in Southern California. Classes are available weekly for learn-to-ride to advanced.
