Thinking he had what was perhaps his best shot yet of winning a 600cc Supersport final, Hacking was thwarted when Erion Honda's Nicky Hayden barged 'past on the entrance to turn 10 at Road Atlanta on the ninth lap, pushing Hacking wide and off the track in the process. It was the decisive move in the red-flaginterrupted and eventually red-flagshortened race. Nicky Hayden went on to defeat his brother Tommy Hayden by just .245 of a second, with Tommy's Yamaha teammate Hacking third, also just a fraction behind after an inspired ride following his off-track excursion. He was driven by anger and he felt that if the race hadn't been stopped for good three laps early, the outcome may have been dif- . ferent.
