The riders were sent into the famous Pine Ridge gullies and narrow, overgrown ravines. The Boulder Yamaha/FMF/Fox/Smith-backed Schmelzle gave notice to the competition early by marking out of the first test section with the lowest score. KTM-mounted Forrest Tobin, Bryan Penney and Suzukimounted Chris Willbanks were close behind. Most of the first loop was tight, technical single-track trail. The fast pace was maintained throughout the 41-mile, six-check, three-special-test first loop. The second loop started out with a check-in at the first possible. Riders were on the gas, crossing high-speed meadows and then plunging back into some very tight trail. What seamed like new, virgin terrain was really an existing trail that had recently 'been logged. This made for challenging and creative riding. Schmelzle made up some ground in this section. "I just tried not to ride over my head," Schmelzle explained. "This place can put you on your head in a hurry." At the second gas, it was still Schmelzle, with Tobin, KX-mounted Penney, and Willbanks all together and too close to call. C riders finished just before the second gas. Tom Gale put in a good ride on his KTM and won the overall in the C class. Jerry Coy won the Sportsman class aboard his KTM. The third loop was fast compared to the 27-mile special test. Riders dropped into a very narrow, 10-foot-high rocky section, wi th lots of footpeg marks on the sides. The section got the top riders way behind before they were turned loose onto some high-speed fire roads and open meadows. The fun factor was high as they gassed it up in high gear through the fast ravines, launching off the plateau dropaways into the sand washes below. Schmelzle was happy to win his first RMEC overall, carding a nine. "I only crashed once, when I caught neutral trying a side-hill pass on three guys at once," said Schmelzle. "I usually ride this race WFO, but today I rode a little more conservative." Just one point back, Tobin hung tough, taking second overall. Senior A-elass rider Chris Willbanks had a great ride, finishing third overall with 11 points. Penney kept his KX hard on the gas to finish fourth overall. Mark Stevens finished fifth overall on his KX. Top B-class overall winner Mike Harvey put in a good ride on his KTM. YZ-mounted Ben Jansma had his bestever ride, winning the 250cc B class. Andrew Hill took the win in the FourStroke B class. «I -. F '. ¢r .(:, . . >C V : ~ • <;, : Vi 19913'. ! ~:~Zon ~~~."'~ ~. : ~;~"d:.
