his antics have been edited out of subsequent airings of the race. Incidents like this one are just plain bad for the sport and everyone involved. Mia Noelson . mianoelson@hotmail.com World Mini response I would like to respond to the "World Mini Nightmare" ("Voices," Issue #17, May 5) letter. There were a number of facts that were incorrect which I would like to clear up. 1. Mr. Riess spoke to me at the signup window, not with Patty Moorwood; 2. It was one hour after sign-up closed (5 p.m.) that Mr. Riess tried to make changes. Since he pre-entered, he had in his possession the information packet that was sent to him stating in writing that the window would be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It was during this time that numerous other people who pre-entered requested changes and were readily accommodated; 3. Mr. Reiss told me he "called the office a couple of days ago," which would have been Monday. The Norwalk office closed on March 31 (Wednesday) and the NMA officials went to Las Vegas - so he col!Jd not possibly have talked to anyone in the Norwalk office, since there was nobody there. If his son's bike broke two weeks before the event, then he had plenty of time to call before the closing date at the office, or he could have followed the information sheet and waited his tum in line like the others who made changes. Or he could have fixed it, like he did a few hours before the event; 4. To his question, "So I'm supposed to eat my $250?" I, not Patty Moorewood, responded by suggesting he see if some of the factory people could help him, and he chose not to pursue that avenue, but instead said he was going to write Cycle News about this. I responded with, "Information was sent out to you about the times we were open, so do what you have to do." I applaud tile NMA officials for whom I work - Patti Moorewood and Ron Henrickson. With over 2000 entries, they have to be consistent with their times in order to get the program up and running. In events as big as this one, event promoters have to take a firm stand and stay within the time frame they have set. It is unfortunate that pe0ple want the rules changed to meet their needs without taking into consideration the whole picture. The World Mini was formed for the riders and tha t is why there have to be rules and guidelines. 1£ it were all about money, then there would not be a World Mini. The event was run smoothly and in a timely manner. Jannice McAlister Coeur d'Alene, ID Good Jill I just wanted to take the time to thank Jill Patterson for her help during what was a very difficult time for me. At a recent CERA 0-36 Enduro in Georgetown, I had a bit of bad luck and badly broke my left leg. Fortunately, two other riders (a big thank-you to the two guys on minute 35) saw me go off the trail and down into a large gully - where I promptly disappeared from view. The person who got to me first was Cycle News contributor Jill Patterson, who had been taking photographs and reviewing the race for the newspaper. Jill was incredibly helpful and her attitude certainly helped keep my spirits up. Her willingness to give me her coat for warmth, get additional help, fashion a splint for my leg, and be of general help and good cheer was greatly appreciated. Without Jill, the one-hour wait for the ambulance would have been much more difficult and could have been costly to my health. Jill promised to ensure my motorcycle got back to my friends and that my friends would be apprised of my situation and told which hospital they were taking me to. Jill stayed with me until I left in the ambulance and she stayed to keep her promise. She convinced one of the guys to help get my bike out of the gully, and then she rode my motorcycle to the gas stop. At the end of the race, she made sure my motorcycle made it to my friends and informed them of my situation. What she did for me was above and beyond the call and was greatly apprecia ted. 1 would also like to thank all the others who helped me through this painful situation. I will be out of racing for a few months, but I plan to return this fall. Todd Kimble San Jose, CA Bad Jill I realize journalists cannot cover every ~Jlgle, but it's too bad that Jill Patterson took Mr. Kirk Kellerman's letter regarding her coverage of the Wilseyville National Hare Scrambles so personally that she felt she had to slander me in her letter to the editor. The sad thing is tha t her letter said "several reported seeing Stavish cut the course to take a detour around a deep-rutted and bogged-out section." Her story read, "...lapped riders, who were sta lied in sea t-deep mud, blocking the only line along portions of the course." I was credited with second place; no one came forward to protest. For her or anyone to dispute that now is pointless. As for Ms. Patterson's comment that she was unable to contact me, I hung out at the sign-up tent until final results were posted with my name on my jacket - while I watched three of the top five leave. Also, I have two phone lines, neither of which she called. I felt I needed to clear my name in this matter.·I directly represent my sponsors, so I need to maintain my image. Without their support, 1 could not compete in this sport that I love. Matt Stavish Minneapolis, MN Deal with the devil A daylong family trip to the zoo, killer seats to a John Mellancamp concert, a dozen roses, a mushy card and approximately one week of near on-my-knees butt kissing. Guys, you're killing me. Please schedule the Glen Helen round of the National Motocross Series on a day other than Mother's Day. I'm probably silly for even suggesting that the solution would be as simple as the following, but here are a few possibilities: Rotate the Mother's Day race among the other tracks or, on the weekend of the Mother's Day race, run the Pros on Saturday. Thank you, Glen Helen administration and all of those responsible, for putting on another awesome evellt. Tab Maudlin Chino Hills, CA Crossover winners With Larry Pegram winning both a Grand National Dirt Track and a Super- bike National, my question is, How many other riders have won races in the top levels of AMA racing? At least in the modem era - say, the last 15 years, when racing has become so specialized within each specific form of racing - have there been any others? I remember Bubba Shobert back in the days of the Camel Pro Series, but I can't remember any others. I believe Larry's accomplishment is a major one - one that few other racers can lay claim to. William H. Lloyd Torrington, cr Since the very first Grand National Champion was crowned in 1930, only 20 men have managed to win both a dirt track National and a road race National. The list is impressive: Skip Aksland, David Aldana, Brad Andres, Art Baumann, M11rk Brelsford, Doug Chandler, Kenny Eggers, Bobby Hill, Joe Leonard, Dick Mann, Fred Nix, Gary Nixon, Larry Pegram, Cal Rayborn, Roger Reiman, Carroll Resweber, KellllY Roberts, Gene Romero, Bubba Shobert and Ralph White. Of those 20, only four have been able to pull off the Grand Slam (road race, mile, half-mile, short track, IT) - Doug Chandler, Dick Mann, Kenny Roberts and Bubba Shl,lbert...
