Not one to give up, Smith struck back and chased Commans for the whole race and eventually took back the lead. "Hayden got sideways coming up the inside of a muddy hill and slid out," Smith said. From that point on, it was clear sailing for Smith, who powered away to the victory aboard his Curnutt Shock-backed KTM 50. The second mota saw Smith pull a repeat holeshot, with Commans and a hard-charging Chris Ploufe in tow. Ploufe was on the move,· and he made a couple of quick passes but he, too, would be a vicItim of the same slippery uphill that claimed Commans in moto one. SmiU, emerged ill the lead by the completion of lap one, with Commans in hot pursuit. The two Micro Mini racers fought it out for the remainder of the moto, with Commans coming out on top of the battle. In the end, the war went to Smith, whose more consistent finishes placed him on the top spot of the podium and made him tl1e recipient of the biggest plaque and tons of toys. "My favorite prize was the Army truck and the toy YZ400," he said. flormer Mini rider Jared Williams had a nearly flawless day in the 125cc Novice class.
