Jones on at Metrolina

CHARLOTTE, NC, MAY 1
Honda-mounted Scott Jones was "on" and he
took the win in the 250cc C class after a ferocious
battle with Jesse Baker and David Graddy in the
second of two warmup races for the 1999 Rollercoaster Racing Tour.
Nearly 230 riders enjoy~d the technical, fun
track a t" the comeback race for the Metrolina
Fairgrounds facility. In spite of drenching rains
all over the region, the track was very ridable
and - unbelievably - even a little dusty toward
the end of the program.
When the gate fell backward to begin the
250cc C heat race, Scott Jones was not the first to
rea.ch turn one. The lead belonged to Jesse
Baker, who was followed by Jason Koenig.
Jones was third at the start, and he used the
four-lap qualifier to ge~ used to his CR250, preferring to settle for a safe third rather than risk a
possible crash.
Jones was prepared for the start of the 250cc
C main event, and he blasted to the first turn,
with David Graddy and Chris Coogler on his
fender. Baker got a terrible start, and Koenig's
was even worse, and they immediately set to
work on passing the riders between themselv~s
and Jones.
By the halfway point of the seven-lap main,
both Baker and Koenig caught second.-placed
Graddy. The Yamaha rider held off Baker for
what seemed like an hour, but three laps later
Graddy allo,,:,ed Baker to slip past. For the last
two laps, Baker was all over Jones, even grabbing the lead once, but it didn't stick. Graddy
and Koenig were also dose at hand, waiting for
a possible double crash, but Jones was steady
and didn't make any mistakes, blasting past the
checkered flag in front.
William Wilson won both of the increasingly
popular Exhi~ition classes after some exCiting
battles with holeshot artist Casey Barnes, Michael
Duke and local talent Matthew Davis. Combined
A- and B-class riders in 125cc and 250cc Exhibition contests are scored as one class, enabling the
B riders to hone their skills, and providing a possible wake-up ",,11 for the A riders.
"I like it," commented Wilson. "The Exhibition classes give us n:\Ore competition and keeps
all of us sharper."
