Horizon Racing U.S.A. is taking a major step to help ensure motorcyclists keep their right to ride by donating money to the AMA from the sale of its radiator coolant/ antifreeze, according to the AMA. Despite the best efforts of the 2000-plus letters that were sent to Governor Gray Davis on his behalf, Cliff Glidden, the deputy director of California's OffHighway Vehicle J;'rogram, has been replaced. "I am extremely proud of the California OHV program," Glidden said. "The $36 million annual budget, staff of over 150 and more than 200 statewide OHV locations is an example of how government should work: for the people. We know who our customer is: It is you. For the last five years, I have focused on OHV opportunity. The X Games will run from Jun~ 25 Good things, small packages highlight Honda 2000 off-road line T he much-anticipated next-generation XR engine may have turned out to be a bust - at least for this year - but that didn't stop Honda from introducing sweeping changes and adding a small surprise to its 2000 motocross and off-road model lineups. Starting with the MX weaponry, the 2000 Honda CR125R and CR250R are all-new machines, fea turing "second-genera tion" semi-double-cradle aluminum frames that Honda says are tuned to provide the optimum combination of rigidity and necessary flex for impact absorption, traction compliance and vibration reduction. Both models will also reoeive frame-geometry changes and a new swingarm. The layout of the machines is said to be much narrower, imparting a lighter, slimmer feel. Suspensionwise, the CRs will receive new shocks and revised linkage ratios, with the CR125R utilizing a new KYB fork with im.proved damping characteristics. The CR250R is equipped with a Showa front fork with internal modifications to help reduce friction. Both engines have been thoroughly redesigned and feature larger airboxes, new cylinders and heads, all-new power valve designs and new 'exhaust pipes. A Mikuni TMX carb now feeds the CRI25R's combustion chamber, with the juices being ignited by a redesigned ignition system. Suggested retail prices are $4899 for the CR125R and $5799 for the CR250R. Expect to see both bikes in dealer showrooms by September. Also returning with minor revisions ·will be Honda's CR80R, -CR80R Expert and CRSOOR. Moving from big to little, sinall folk can look forward to the 2000 Honda XR50R, the newest in the family of Honda's four-stroke off-road lineup and the successor to one of the most popular-selling models in Honda history, the Z50R. The XR isn't just a Z in disguise, however. It is a new design, featuring the same tough little four-stroke, three-speed engine but matedto a longer-wheelbase frame and larger lO-inch spoke wheels to improve both turning and straight-line stability.
