Round 2: Prairie City SVRA Park MAZDA TRUCKSIAMA 250cc NA TlONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MX SERIES By Matt Freeman Photos by Kinney Jones SACRAMENTO, CA, MAY 16 fler posting two solid moto wins and the overall during round one of the 250cc a tional Motocross Championship Series at Glen Helen Raceway Park just a week earlier, all eyes were on the Team Honda CR250 of Sebastien Tortelli. As the 40-rider field of the first 250cc moto exited the nearlBO-degree first turn of the Hangtown Motocross track, Tortelli was nowhere to be found. Instead, claiming the holeshot and the lead for the first eight laps was Tortelli's teammate Kevin Windham. Windham ended up third in the moto, but he was definitely not finished yet. A great start in moto two led to a second-place moto finish, which netted Windham the overall win in front of 23,745 cheering spectators. "Going off the gate in the second moto, the overall wa n't even in my head at that point," Windham said. "It wasn't even in my mind. There's so many fast guys here right now, I was just concentrating on getting a good start, and I didn't think about the overalol. until about two laps to go." With two laps to go, Windham was chasing a distant Jeff Emig, who finished fifth in the first moto. After gating third in the second moto, the Team Kawasaki rider passed Windham for the lead at the halfway point of the 30minute-plus-two-Iap race. From there it was smooth sailing around the high- A u> N ~ ~ 8 speed Hangtown circuit for Emig, who was awarded second when scores were tallied. "My choice of lines was good, and that allowed me to have energy at the end of the race," Emig said of his mototwo win. "Windham was going fast. He had good times all weekend, and he was riding awesome with good starts. Kevin's a real good friend of mine, and I would like to congra tula te him on this win." Also congratulating Windham for his win while on the podium was Team Honda's Ezra Lusk, who finished third. Lusk was the victor of moto one and the victim of a mototwo first-turn pileup. Remounting his bike nearly dead last, the Supercross Series runner-up picked his way through the pack, finishing an impressive sixth in themoto. ''I'm happy with how [ rode," Lusk said at the awards ceremony. "Getting out, charging and passing people and getting a really good lead and not looking back (in the first moto, no doubt). I usually do terrible here." Finishing fourth with a 6-3 moto tally was the Factory Connection/Honda of Mike LaRocco, followed by the defending series champion, Team Yamaha's Doug Henry. '1t felt good to run the pace - for a little while, anyway," said Henry, who finished fourth in moto one and held the lead in the second outing until fading (Top) Kevin Windham (14) was not the fastest man on the Hangtown track, but he was by far the most consistent, going 3'2 on the day. Early in the first moto, Doug Henry (1) and Ezra Lusk (4) chased him as he led for eight laps. (Above) Jeff Emig was back up to speed with a fifth-place finish in the first moto and a win in the second. Emig chased down Windham in the second moto and opened up a comfortable lead to claim second overall.
