said. "The announcer won't know the scores - maybe some of them will, some of them won't; the flag man won't know. The people are going to be sitting there wondering who's ahead,. who's behind. That's not entertainment:' When asked about the mechanical problems that might occur, Werner . added: '1 think these bikes will last 50 miles; they used to run 200 at Daytona. We've run two 25-milers back to back on the same bike. It wouldn't be a problem:' The surprise of the test was the return of Kevin Atherton on Tom Cummings' TCR Harley. Atherton looked very comfortable and was very interested in making the test successful. "I think it's very feasible; we've just got to get all our ducks in a row," Atherton said. "We've got 'em all together now. We just need to p"ut them in line. The first one is going to be a shakedown. Sure, there are going to be problems, but the following year it will be more perfected. It's going to take a lot of common sense from the riders, which we all pretty much know what's going on. It'll be fun. I'm looking forward to it." Tommy Cummings was ready to give it a hot after performing his pitstop duties as the gas man. "T.e. spilled gas on me every time we'll have to work on that," Atherton May 16; June 6 &13; July 11 &18 ENTRY FEE: $30 $25 for 2nd class $15 for Pee Wee GATE FEE: $10 for Adults $5 for 6-12 yrs. ''I'm all for it (the race) if it's safe," Cummings add,?d. "We worked pretty hard on making a quick pit stop, but I've already got plans for things we can change to make it faster. If they decide to do it, we'll be here if we think it's safe. I know the IMDA is pu tting a lot into making this work. I feel confident that our bikes are up to 50 miles, bu t this track is a horsepower track, and it will take a lot of it to win here." . Chris Carr offered perhaps the strongest endorsement of the event, offering a historical persepective on the race as well. "The old-timers are always talking about the 50-miler," Carr said. "This would give us a chance to be a part of that history, too." Carr showed how serious he was as he blasted in to make his pit stops, and Kenny Tolbert and crew worked feverishly to trim time off each stop. "I felt, coming into this, that we should be able' to figure this out and have a race that is fair and is safe," Carr said. "I think what we did today will accomplish that - at least we now have the tools. We know where we need work. I feel very positive that it would be a 5O-mile race that would be good for dirt track racing, and in the end that's the most important thing. I believe it's a very doable thing. "We learned a lot from the scenarios that we ran today," Carr continued. '1 think it would be a fair race. Pit stops are going to be critical. It's going to come down to the guys that do their homework. I don't think a good pit stop could win you the race, but you could definitely lose the race with a real bad one. The way they have it set up, I don't think anyone would gain a major advantage, and I think that's good. We don't want the race won on pit lane. One ?f the things our sport needs is a little bit of change, and I think that our sport would benefit from an event like this. I sit here and look at all those hay bales lining pit lane, and see a lot of signage that would look good on TV. I think if it goes off well, it can't do any-_ thing but help our sport. And if it helps our sport, I'm all for it:' _ RACE TECH TERRY CABLE CEET € ~ BILL'S 1'IPES Call for information: 909-880-3090 or www.glenhelen.com Pick up $5 off entry coupon at participating Yamaha Dealers Beach Yamaha Bellflower Yamaha Chaparral Cycle Supply Corona Yamaha Hahm Motorsports Hahm Motorsports John Burr Cycles long"Beach Yamaha Malcolm Smith M/Sports Huntington Beach 714.549.9086 Bellflower 310.925.5097 San Bernardino 909.889-2761 Corona 909.738.8111 Anaheim 714.563.1700 los Angeles 310.306.7906 Fontana 909.823.1338 long Beach 310.427.2779 Riverside 909.687.1300 Mission Yamaha Montclair Yamaha Moto Pro, Inc.
