(Left) Bartolini went on to score the overall
victory on his Yamaha, turning in a 1-5 tally
from the two motos.
(Above) Trampas Parker rode his two-stroke
KTM to a third-place finish in the second moto.
He is now fourth in the series point standings.
"Shayne knew I was faster and
moved over for me," Johansson said. "I
kept on the gas until I had 15 seconds
over Smets, but then the motor broke
again."
•
But KTM still led, as King tried to
forget the pain in his back. Smets also
had his eyes on his first-ever Schwanenstadt win and closed to within 15 yards
of King.
"It was difficult for me to find the
lines, though, after missing the first race,
and I was making mistakes," Smets said,
He c~rtainly was: hitting the fence
again where he had crashed on Saturday, then a lap later riding sidesaddl~
with the throttle still wide open. His
chances of the win eventually went on
the following lap as he spun around in a
circle at the same corner where Demaria
had stalled.
The KTM team had sacrificed a portion of their reliability to find more
power, and Nicoll 'was nervous until the
bitter end:
"J know what happened to Peter's
motor, and the sam~ could happen to
Shayne's," he said.
But fairy tales can come true - and
the entire team was on the finish
straight to meet King Shayne at the
checkered flag.
Demaria recovered to ninth before
killing the motor again trying to outbrake Jasinski into a turn, P\lzar's motor
simply never pulled out of the gate, and
Darryll King was battling clutch problems all race.
Bartolini was also in trouble.
"I had no front brake," he said. "The
disc is bent. Someone must have
touched it in the first turn."
Nevertheless, his fifth in the mota
was enough to win the GP as, of those
ahead of him, only Machtinger had even
finished the first mota,

In third was Parker, his 380 revving
way beyond any manufacturer's recommended figure as he forced the smallest
bike in the race forward from outside
the top 10 on this genuine horsepower
track.
"That proves again I can race with
those four-strokes," the American said.
"The bad start was down to me,"
Six thundering motos have been run
so far - and they have produced six different winners.
