Events Kevin Walker (S59) puts the 250cc Pro class behind him in the first mota at round four of the U.S. Mega Series, held at Birch Creek Motorsporls Park. Lane, but it was to no avail as Lane was clearly in second place for good. When the checkered flag £lew, it was Sanchez by a wide margin, followed by Lane and Casey, in that order. Twin-cylinder 750cc Yamahas and Triumphs dominated the field in the Vintage main event, in which Eric Weisler and John Proto battled for the lead, with Proto being the top gun. Proto rode the new Lodi track aggressively for the. first half of the race; then he settled in and got more conservative. When the white flag flew, Weisler made one last attempt to catch Proto, but Proto's lead was simply too large and Proto won by a comfortable margin. Back in the third and final podium position was Triumph-mounted Riley Cox, well ahead of the scrapping duo of Tom Booth and Bud Riddle. _ Lodi Cycle Bowl Ladi, California Results: April 17, 1999 PRO EX: 1. United States Mega Series, Round 4 Walker walks away By Jay Hauser DANVILLE, VA,APR.18 ictory Sports Racing promoter Sam Gamon teamed up with Birch Creek Promotions to bring round four of the United States Mega Series to the same venue that is home to the U.S. Eastern Pro-Am Series, and with more than 500 riders on hand, the event was a great success. The event was littered with some of the country's best amateur racers, both young and old. Team Green's James Stewart was on hand to rip the 80cc (9-13) class apart. Ben Riddle was totally unstoppable in 125cc and 250cc B racing. Riddle's other Team Green teammate, Josh Summey, had a stellar day, winning both motos of Schoolboy racing over Stewart's bigwheel KX80. On the other side of the coin, Kevin V Walker, a past Loretta Lynn's champion, was there, smoking in the 125cc A, 250cc A and Over 25 A classes, beating the likes of Jim Chester, who recently took an eighth-place National ranking in the Natjonal Arenacross series. Add to the list past World Grand Prix contender and Motocross Des Nations team member Billy Liles, and the Loretta Lyrm's area qualifier was full of star power. Stewart was unbelievable aboard his Team Green KXSO, as he was in a class by himself in the 80cc (9-13) Modified division, besting the field by more than half a lap in both motos. But when Stewart lined up for the Schoolboy class, he found himself underpowered next to the larger 125cc machines. Josh Summey continued his winning ways now that he has moved up to the bigger bikes, and he was able to reel off a pair of fine rides for both moto wins. Matt Barnes was unimpressed. by Stewart and pulled· ~ a tight third-place ride to Stewart in moto one, only to come back in moto two and slip the little mini speedster back a notch to take second overall to Summey. Birch Creek regular Adam Overcash netted fourth on the day, ahead of Brian Behnen. Just returning to action from a layoff due to an injury, Kevin Walker is back up to speed in a big way. Finding himself out in front of the 250cc Pro class, Walker kept the 22-rider field at bay to win the 250cc Pro-class overall. As expected, Walker's main competition came from Suzuki rider Jim Chester. Chester put up a good battle in both motos, only to fall a little short when the flag fell, and he would have to be happy with a pair of second-place rides for the runner-up honors. One of the most impressive rides of the day came from Yamaha' rider Jared Black, who put in some strong rides to make up for a pair of mediocre starts and ended the day recording a pair of solid third-place rides to make the podium, just edging out Husqvarna-mounted Jeff Ryan and William Wilson. Walker's winning ways did not end with his 250cc Pro-class overall, as he a lso recorded a pair of moto wins to take the 125cc Pro class over 'Chester and ·Black. Yamaha of LumbertonlSitec Racing's Mark Wagne·r was quite impressive, as he grabbed fourth in the 125cc· Pro contest, with Richard Prather putting his KTM into the top five with a fifth. Walker also took the Over 25 A-class overall win, but it was in this class that Walker was handed his one and only defeat of the day, as Chester came away with the opening-moto win. Walker came back, however, to win the moto that makes the difference, and in winning moto two he nabbed the overall over Chester and Prather. Billy Liles grabbed fourth overall in Over 25 A racing to go along with his sweep of the Over 30 A class. Sidney Williams rounded out the top five in Over 25 A action. Many say that Team Green rider Ben Riddle is out of place riding in the B classes, and that just might be. Riddle turns lap times that would put him in Ule hunt for Ero-class wins wherever he goes, and the Birch Creek round of the Mega Series was no exception. In the staggered AI B class motos, Riddle made up the deficit of starting on the second gate to finish the equivalent of top five in the Pro class. In his effort to catch the A-class guys, he left his B-class competitors in his dust. The only rider to even keep an eye on Riddle was Josh Summey in the 125cc B class, as he fini hed runner-up to Riddle. Matt Barnes' strong ride in the Schoolboy class was no fluke, as he backed it up with third overall in 125cc B action. Just as in the 125cc B race, Riddle was long gone in the 250cc B, leaving the battle for second to Thomas Parsons and Doug Earls. Parsons' score of 2-2 assured him second overall to Earl's score of 4-3. Moto-one third-place finisher Jason Baldwin did not make the second moto and recorded a DNS, taking himself out of the hunt for a top-three overall. _ Birch Creek Motocross Danville, Virginia Results: April 1S, 1999 (Round 4) 50 (4~6): 1.
