Springsteen had the start wired, and after that it appeared that the only way he could fail would have been if he suffered mechanical failure. "I got the start, and I went about five laps, then I looked back coming off two," Springsteen said. "I saw I had a little bit of a lead. I went a few more laps and looked back again. I saw I had a good lead. After that I said, 'I ain't looking back again: I just tried to keep a solid pace going:' Hayden had looked strong all night, and he used a good start to put himself in a strong position for a good finish. "Some guys made some mistakes, and turn one was pretty good to me," Bayden said. "I got right up there with those guys. Kevin and I were dicing the whole race. I got around him with about five laps to go, and that was it." Third place was surely hard-earned for Carr. "I'm pleased; I'm really happy," Carr said. "When you start on the second row in a place like this, anything can happen. I don't know where I was that first lap, seventI, or eighth. I just moved up one at a time. Then, for a while there, it felt like I couldn't gain on the guys:' Bigelow's strong fifth-place ride matched his best Grand National finish. "It seemed like everyone in front of me that looked back and saw me, they would change their line and go way to the inside," Bigelow said. "That just made it that much easier.-It was one of the strangest things I've seen. People were giving it to me, it seemed like. I think (with) a few more laps I could have caught Chris and those guys, but you've got to get off the line with them to run with them. One of these days I hope to do it the easy way, but for now this will have to work:' Early in the race, King made a bad mis~e going into tum one. '1 was about fifth at one time - it was early in the race," King said. "But I got real squirrelly going into one. Me and Parker got together. I was going down, and he knocked me back upright. That moved us both back. I just couldn't make a charge. The harder I tried to go, the worse it got:' Parker's view was much the same. "He (King) got wobbly going into one and did a horn dance," Parker said. "I thought he had it straightened out. About that time, I was coming under him, and I thought he was just going to drift on high, but he straightened up and hooked back down. We bumped pretty good; I put my hand up to say sorry. When you do something like that, you feel bad, but there really was nothing either one of us could do. I was just hoping that we didn't hook handlebars and do something really stupid, but we got out of it:' Landes made the most ,of a bad situation. "I started way back - I could barely see 17th," Landes said. "About the 10th lap, I found I was able to run it in real hard into the corners. I finally got to where I could work the front end. Then I just started getting one at a time. Morehead wasn't even in sight; then I reeled him in. The next group was Hacker and Rich King. I think one more lap and I probably could have got them, too. I'll take this. After the heat race, I didn't even feel like I could ride a motorcycle. We changed everything on the motorcycle. We had to go back to the basics; then I started feeling comfortable again. We'll take it and go on to Harrington:' "I got a bad start, and that was it," More!lead said of his ride. "I got to racing with Hacker, and we just got into one another's way. It was pretty uneventful. We fumbled around all night, trying to get going. Any time you put your foot down and hit yourself on the back of your head, I'm not going to go fast on a night like that. But I sure am tickled for Springsteen:' Teague had mixed emotions about his squandered front-row start. "I just got a bad start, but other than that we had a good night," Teague said. "You can't expect to get your first time out, but I felt pretty good. I felt like I was gaining energy every lap. At the start, I got sideways and pointed it towards the wall, and the second and third row was catching me by then. All in all, it felt good:' _ Hagerstown Speedway Hagerstown, Maryland Results: May 8, 1999 (Round 2 of 22) HEAT 1 (10 laps; U riders, top three uarn;£e:r): 1. J.R. Schnabel (H-D); 2.
