same lap, the top three were set, especially after Edwards broke Fogarty two
laps later. Simultaneously, Walker's second good race the day ended with a
mechanical retirement, and Haydon
ended up on the same piece of tarmac
he had landed on in race one, unable to
make his battered body as strong as his
will to win for a change.
It was a similar story to Slight's,
who had picked himself up from his
own Melbourne drama, changed his
fairing, and went out again a lap down
and ended up in a scrap with his own
teammate, Edwards. Many feared that
Slight would screw up his teammate's
chances of the win, others thought he
was deliberately shielding Edwards
from any possible Fogarty attack, but
both were proved wro~g when Slight
crashed for the second time in one race,
in big style at Coppice, badly cutting a
finger.
Yanagawa was again the silent ninja,
working his way up from 12th on lap
one this time to finish fourth, four seconds behind a lackluster Corser and
eight ahead of a beaten but unbowed
Chili.
At the front, Edwards had finally laid
the specter of Ducati domination to rest,
contradicting his own comments in the
nicest possible way, and changing his
spirits almost instantaneously from
gloom to glee.
As he and Fogarty made their way
through the almost inevitable Donington crowd invasion on the cool-off lap,
Edwards had dethroned his teammate
for a second time in 45 minutes, this
time only figuratively, as Edwards took
over third spot in the championship
table. Fogarty extended his lead to 23
points, putting him almost a whole win
ahead of Corser.
A great day's racing in front of an
appreciative crowd, 60,000 of them
applauding not just Fogarty, James
Whitham and Ian MacPherson but all
the International showmen in The F1ammini Brothers' carnival of speed and
color - which just for a change - wasn't
entirely decked out in Ducati red.
