Harley-Davidson officials announced tha t they are planning to build an eight-acre complex that showcases the Harley-Davidson motorcycling experience in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The development will fea ture exhibits from the company's collection of vintage vehicles, memorabilia, and current products; specialty retail shopping; and an outdoor special events area. The facilities, scheduled to be operated year-round, are expected to draw more than 350,000 visitors annually, according to Harley. "The HarleyDavidson experience - its sense of adventure and personal freedom - will be shared with motorcycle enthusiasts and the public in an engaging alld artful way," said Jeff Bleustein, HarleyDavid on chairman and chief operating officer. "We are excited to see this dream become a reality." Construction on the $30 million development will start this summer and will be completed in the summer of 2002. The development will feature a renovated fivestory former brewery building, circa 1850, housing an interactive museum and presentations on the HarleyDavidson culture and lifestyle. The building's top floor will be transformed into the city's second-largest catering and hospitality area. A 300seat Harley-Davidson restaurant will be constructed across the street from the main building along the Milwaukee River. Fast Company Management has put together a marketing co-op for partidpa hng motorcycle dealers, accessory and aftermarket companies who would like to participate in Jeff Ward's quest to win the Indianapolis 500 at the end of May. The promoters of Summercross, a supercross event smeduled for the Los Angeles Coliseum on July 10, have announced that the race will also feature a $5000-a-minute, two-lap "Dash for Cash" race, featuring all the heat and semi winners. There will aIso be a $3500 bonus that will go to the winner of the fastest heat race of the night. Invitational entries for the event are scheduled to be sent out on· May 10, according to the promoters. Who's the teacher now? Formula USA has announced that the Sport Rider Shootout will return to the two-race F-USA Series this year. The - Sport Rider Shootout will pay a bonus of $5000 to the team whose rider scores the most points at Portland International Raceway and Pocono International Speedway. The award is sponsored by Sport Rider Magazine. In what is possibly the first attempt to combine motorcycling with theatre, the Playwrights' Center of San Francisco will present a staged reading of a play "Over the Top." Written and performed by Randy Warren, "Over the Top" is an amusing look at the challenges of motorcycling the world's highest roads. The New Zealand-based BSL 500cc Grand Prix tearn will enter the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez on May 9 after missing the Japanese Grand Prix due to ternnical problems with the prototype engine that the team ran in the Malaysian Grand Prix. Immediately following tile Jerez race, the team will head to the new Valencia track in Spain for two d.ays of testing prior to heading back to France to prepare for the Frenm Grand Prix on May 23.
