Gobert had previously won two separate legs of the World Superbike Championship at Laguna. Harley.Davidson's Pascal Picotte didn't have a good weekend after finishing third just a week earlier at Sears Point. Picotte's VR1000 suf· fered with electrical problems all weekend, cut· ting short the French Canadian's track time and severely hampering his efforts to find a good race setup. He also suffered a blown engine duro ing qualifying. Picotte's race was cut short when he pulled off to prevent blowing up another engine. "I was over·rewing it a little bilto keep up." Picotte said. "I was making up time in the corners. but I could only do it for so long. It started vibrating so I thought it was safer to pull in than blow it up. " Picotte's teammate, Scott Russell. didn't fare any better. Russell ended up parking both of his VRs during qualifying and his race ended with an electricjll problem after just two laps. Eric Bostrom continues to battle back to complete fitness while also regaining the confi· dence that led him to two AMA Superbike National wins last year. Bostrom ended up -ninth in the National. "It's gelting better," Bostrom sai'd. "I was happy for the red flag. I got screwed in the first part. A lapper pulled over in my way and we hit. That's when (Steve) Crevier got by and it uitimately led to eRich) Oliver getting by because it messed me up. In the second part. I got really angry and started throWing it in like I need to. We' re getting back to where we need to be. My biggest problem is that I get a little winded. a little fatigued, because I haven't been able to train at all." Bostrom ended up ninth in the Na.tional.
