Technosel Carolina Ultra Series, Round 3
By Kirk Johnson
FOREST CITY, NC, APR. 11
he threat of severe weather did
not deter the more than 450 riders
who showed up at round three of
the Tecnosel Carolina Ultra Series at
Cathey's Creek Motocross Park, and
when the weather finally broke, Yamaha of Kingsport's Kevin Walker turn_ed
up the heat and took home two class
wins.
Walker was the only rider to garner
two class wins on the day_ The Tennessee native utilized his patience and
fast corner speed on the tight, twisty
course. Walker's first win of the day
came in the 125cc Pro class. Although
Walker would go I-Ion the day, the
wins were anything but easy.
In mota one, Walker stalked Suzuki
of Gastonia/Cycle Suspension/SinisaIo's Jim Chester. Fresh off his eighthplace overall finish in the PJl National
Arenacross series, Chester seemingly
had all of his bases covered, c.ounter-

Kevin Walker (859) grabs the early lead
over Paul Justus (439), Brian Lane (7)
and Jim Chester (8) during 125cc Pro
moto action at the third round of the
Carolina Ultra Series MX at Cathey's
Creek. Walker won both the 125 and
250Cc Pro classes.
ing each of Walker's moves. But the
final lap saw Chester uncharacteristically leave the door open and allow
Walker to slip by in the final turns for
the win.
Third in moto one was Team
Green/Thor /Performance Friction's
Josh Capps, who would have a battle
with Husky-mounted Jeff Ryan for the
entire moto and swap the final podium
position a couple of times. Entering the
final laps, the position was still undecided until Capps, feeling the pressure
from behind, turned up the wick and
made the pass for good.
That left Ryan to try to hold off Al
Lane Yamaha/Fleshgear/Barr's Com-
petition's Jered Black and Alpha Motorsports/ Acerbis/Moto XXX's Chuck
Shirley. These two Yamaha riders
engaged in a battle in the early laps that
lasted the entire mota, with Black gaining the upper hand just past the
halfway point and rounding out the top
five, hot on the heels of Ryan at the
checkered.
Mota two saw Suzuki-mounted Paul
Justus, who was just returning from hiatu after recuperating from a broken leg,
grab the holeshot. His lead, however,
was short-lived, as Walker made a move
for. the lead before the end of la.p one.
Walker went on to open a slight advantage, and Chester also made his way
past Justus early and set out after Walker. The two front-runners distanced
themselves from the rest of the pack.
Walker maintained his lead until he
cased the triple after the finish line. Seeing the wind knocked out of Walker's
sails, Chester made his move. Chester
closed the gap but was hindered slightly
by lappers and had to settle for the runner-up position, with Walker taking the
win.
Justus held on to third, over AI Lane
Yamaha/MSR's Brian Lane and hardcharging KTM-mounted Richard
Prather.
Walker took his second win in the
250cc Pro class with a vengeance. The
YZ400F-mounted rider took both
holeshots and never looked back in
either race, going 1-1 for his second
overall on the day.
Again keeping Walker honest was
Chester, who finished 2-2 for second on
the day. Chester gated fourth in moto
one and quickly moved up to battle
with Black for the number-two position.
Once into second, Chester maintained a
steady pace. Moto two was Uneventful
for the Lenoir, North Carolina, rider, as
he gated second behind Walker but
could not match his pace.
Taking third overall was Josh Capps
with 5-3 scores. The Kawasaki rider battled back from a bad start in the first
mota to secure fifth on the final lap, over
Al Lane Yamaha rider William Wilson.
The second race saw Capps grab third
off the start and, after a brief scuffle
with Justus, ride to a lonely third.
Rounding out the 'top five overall were
Black (3-5) and Justus (4-6).
The Supermini class was also hot!y
contested, as 22 riders were all vying for
the first-mota holeshot. Yamaha-mounted Jake Furnace grabbed the early lead,
shadowed by Suzuki-mounted Steven
- Shoaf, Yamaha pilot Ryan Burkett and
Suzuki rider Chris Osbourne. Furnace
slowly opened up a lead, never to be
headed the entire mota. Shoaf and Burkett squared off in a battle, with Burkett
gaining the upper hand for a secondplace first-mota finish. Shoaf stayed
close, waiting for a mistake. Fourth place
went to Performance Honda/Suzuki
rider Blake Hovis, and rounding out the
top five was Kawasaki-mounted Dustin
Oates, who gated terribly and spent the
entire moto playing catch-up.
Mota two was a carbon copy start of
the first mota, with Furnace out front
one more time. Furnace 'again pulled a
lead over the rest of the pack, taking the
win and the overall. Oates, with a mU9J
better start, spent the entire moto chasing the leader, but it was to no avail,
and he had to settle for the bridesmaid
position. Shoaf again took the final
podium position. Kawasaki-mounted
Travis Flowers gated fourth and never
improved that position. Fifth went to
Hovis.
Mota one of the Unlimited C/D class
saw Honda-mounted Jeremy Hill jet out
to the early lead. Yamaha rider Chad
Popovich, Suzuki-mounted Terrell
Collins and Yamaha rider Derrick Ice- .
hour all gave chase. Hill maintained his
lead, taking an uncontested win.
The man on the move was Suzuki of
Gastonia's Rick Rikard, who gated outside the top five and quickly sliced his
way to fourth, then picked off popovich,
who had fallen victim to Collins. Rikard
then made his move on Collirts on the
final lap to take second. The final tally
read Hill, Rikard, Collins, Popovich and
Kawasaki-mounted Bobby Honack.
Hill had the hot hand in moto two as
well, grabbing the lead while the rest of
the field was busy jockeying for position. Popovich worked h,is way into second, past Honack, who immediately
had his hands full with Rikard. Honack
was unable to hold off the hard-charging rider and lost third as well. As moto
two ended, it was Hill with the win and
the overall. Popovich was second,
Rikard third, and Honack held on to
fourth, over Yamaha-mounted Phillip
Shields.
