Vintage Cycle Promotions will be honoring the Norton marque at its 31st anniversary vintage-motorcycle extravaganza at Kings Fair and Speedway in Hanford, California, on May 15. In addition to a concours d'elegance featuring 11 different classes, and a swa p meet, there will be an evening of AHRMA dirt track racing as well. Admission is $5 for the show and $8 for the races. TravelCraft is organizing a motorcycle expedition across the Himalayas, August 1-13. The ride will cross the highest passes in the world, and TravelCraft claims that participants will join an elite group holding the world's record for altitude by motorcycle - at over 18,000 feet. The tour will include trips to the border of Tibet and the Buddhist monasteries of Ladakh. There will be hotel accommodations at the start of the ride and camping thereafter. The National Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame in Sturgis, South Dakota, has announced that three more individuals have been selected for induction into its Hall of Fame in 1999. Chet Dykgraaf, who began his racing career aboard a Norton in 1942 and went on to win the AMA National Championship and number-one plate at Springfield, illinois, in 1946, will be ind ucted for his contributions in competition. Ed Netterberg, an Abate of South Dakota member who has acted as that group's state coordina.tor, lobbyist, state representative and chapter president, will be inducted in recognition of his leadership. Dave Despain, who started out writing press releases for the AMA before moving on to a tremendously successful and rewarding (for both himself and motorcycling) broadcast career, will be honored for his contributions in the area of promotion. Victory Motorcycles announced that it reached another milestone when it shipped its 2000th Victory V92C motorcycle on April 6. The Minneapolis, Minnesota-based cruiser manufacturer that is a part of Polaris Industries claims to be well on the way to its goal of shipping 5000 units in the 1999 model year. The first bike rolled out of the company's Spirit Lake, Iowa, assembly plant last July. It now boasts over 300 North American dealers, with international expansion in the works. Racing Enterprises Motorsports is proud to announce that it will bring its Commotion at the Glen motocross event to Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, June 5-6. The event was formerly known as Commotion by the Ocean when it was run at REM's former home track, Carlsbad Raceway. Nine seconds later, Smets took the checkered flag in third, followed by KTM's Peter Johansson of Sweden and Yamaha's Andrea Bartolini of Italy. Smets came back to win the second moto with eight seconds over Bartolini, and Parker finished out,the race ~ distant third. Smets and Parker both carded 35 points on the day, but Smets better fuush In the second moto broke the tie for official overall honors. Parker ended up second overall, followed by Bartolini. Rounding out the top five in the second moto were Johansson and Honda rider Jocke Carlsson of Sweden. After two rounds, Smets leads the series point standings with 63 points, followed by Demana and Bartolini, who are tied with 54 points each. Parker is currently fifth with 45 points. . For the second week in a row, Kawasaki's Marnicq Bervoets won a round of the FIM World Championship 250cc MX Series, this time at the rain-soaked French Grand Prix at Emee on April 18. Bervoets finished third to winner Mickael Maschio and Pit Beirer in the first moto but the Belgian came back to win the second moto over Yamaha's David Vuillemin and Beirer and sew up the. overall. • Bervoets' teammate BeiTer was awarded second overall, while Vuillemin who finished fourth in the first moto, was credited with t1lird overall: Maschio did 'not finish the second moto. American Ryan Hughes went pointless in the first moto and finished fifth in the secondmoto. In the series point standings after four rounds, Bervoets holds a slim three-point lead over Berrer, 120-117. Frenchman Fredenc Bolley, who took fifth in the first moto and did notHnish the second moto in France, is third with 109 points, followe9- by Vuillemm With 85 pOints and Hughes with 79. Pol;tium One MotoPlex in Charlestown, Indiana, will be running a feature main event at its motocross opener on May 1. Bridgestone Tires has signed on as a contingency sponsor for the Grand Prix Riders Association racing series for 125cc GP bikes in 1999. Bridgestone will be supporting the 125cc GP class by offering vouchers to the top-finishing riders who use Bridgestone tires and run Bridgestone decals at GPRA races.The winner's voucher will be worth $250, second place' will be worth $150 and third worth $100. In addition, the winner of the '99 HRC Dealers 125cc Grand Prix National Championship, held in conjunction with the WERA National held at Road Atlanta, October 6-10, will receive five sets of tires for the 2000 GPRA series. Thanks to American Suzuki, the WERA National Endurance Series will utilize a AMB Electronic Scoring System. The transponder system is the same as those currently used by NASCAR and AMA Pro Racing.
