David Ginolli and Chuck Mesley scored overall
wins in the 125 and 250cc Amateur and 125 and
250cc Open Expert classes, respectively, at the season opener at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center.
The extremely competitive 125cc Amateur
class required qualifiers in order to red uce the
field of riders to 40. The class was split into two
groups, and the top 1B finishers in each group,
plus the ~op four riders from the last-chance
qualifier, advanced to a full gate of 40 riders for
the second moto.
Ginolfi easily took the holeshot in the first
Group A moto. Trailing were Jimmy Miller and
Russell Hughes. When the leaders emerged
from the front supcrcros", section oJ the r:ace
course, Ginolfi still had the lead, with Miller,
Aaron Utberg, Ricky Conley and Gene Nighman
in tow. When the leaders came off the &ont section, Ginolfi remained. out front with a lo-second gap between himself and Miller. Nighman
and Tuerck moved up to third and fourth, and
Jason Lewis was fifth. The top four remained
unchanged throughout lap three, while Steve
Cunningham got around Lewis for fifth. Ginolli
took the checkered flag with a 10-second lead,
followed by Miller, Nighman, Cunningham and
Tuerck.
Ryan Matthews got the holeshot in the ~t
moto for Group B, with Bill Beer, Jesse Black,
Travis Hesketh and Sergio Cervoni trailing.
Matthews came off the front section in the lead,
with Beer holding second. Hesketh passed Black
for third, and Cervoni was running fifth. Just
after the start of lap two, Cervoni made a pass on
Black stick, dropping Black to fifth. By the beginning of lap three, Luke Schappert was fifth. Black
dropped back to seventh. Hesketh went down
when his front tire washed out just after the big
downhill double before the finish line. He
remounted quickly and only lost one position to
Cervoni By the end of the lap, the top five were
Matthews, Beer, Hesketh, Luke Schappert and
Cervoni. Beer passed Matthews for the lead on
the last lap and took the moto win. Trailing were
Matthew, Hesketh, Schappcrt.nd Black.
When the gate dropped for the second 125cc
Amateur moto, it was Utberg out £ront, with
Hesketh, Matthews, Josh Gelber and Cunningham in tow. Utberg had a five-second lead by
the halfway mark of lap one. On lap two, Gelbe.r
and Cunningham moved up to third and fourth,
with Matthews dropping to fifth. Cunningham
then set his sights on Gelber and passed him for
third over the finish-line double. By the end of
the second lap, the top five were Utberg, Hesketh, Cunningham, Gelber and Ginolfi. On the
last lap, Cunningham blew by Hesketh like he
was tanding still. Hesketh dropped to third,
Ginolfi moved up to fourth and Gelber to fifth.
Ginolli's 1-4 finish was good enough to take the
overall win.

Arizona's Mark Simpson was the guy to beat in
the Over 30 and 500cc Intermediate classes at
this weekend's round of the American Historic
Racing Motorcycle Association Speed and Sport
National Vintage Motocross Series, as be dominated all four motos aboard his Yamaha MX36O.
The track utilized nearly all of the property
at Perris Raceway, the oldest continually operating race track in California. ZLT Racing gave the
riders a very suitable circuit for machines with
just four inches of rear-wheel travel and did a
great job of getting both rounds of 11 motos run
in a short period of time.
Simpson's first two--moto sweep came in the
500cc Intermediate division, where Gary Egloff
carded a 2-3 score for second, ahead of Kyle
H.mola's 6-2 tally. In the Over 30 class, Simpson
defeated Ohio's Mark MacKay, who then went
on to record a pair of victories of his own, in the
250cc and Over 40 lntermediate contests.
Morrill Griffith made his trip from Colorado
payoff with victories in Over 30 Expert and in
500cc Expert, where he hounded race leader Ed
Zornes until the final lap before zipping past for
the win. Griffith had to settle for second, though,
in the 13-rider Over 40 Expert classl in which
Dennis Spence flexed his four-stroke Honda
muscle to take the win.
Jim Atkins scored one for the Can-Am camp
by taking the Over 40 Novice win with a 1-3
moto score. Second overall fell to mot~two winner John Dwyer, with Jerry Morrison third.
The Premier Lightweight ovice class boasted an interesting mix of machinery, but in the
end, it was BSA Cl55 finishing one-two in the
hands of Phil Benedict and Jerry Sterrett. Finishing third was the Greeves of Roger Brophy, followed by Wayne Rantz, Mike McGough, David
Chrone and Gary Collman.
Sterrett was on the top end of a BSA sweep
in Cassic 500 Novice, where he de.feated New
Mexico's David Dean; Ike Winchell was third
aboard a Montesa Cappra 360.
