.Candia takes Sarona Oaks MX
By Homer Eubanks
RAMONA. CA. APR. 4
Heavy rains on Saturday night and the threat of
rain on Sunday kept many would-he Barona
Oaks motocrossers at home on "',ster. The third
race of a 21-race series would have been canceled
had it not been for the 77 riders willing to face
the elements. Their determination to race scared
the rain away,--and a good afternoon of racing
took place. Joaquin Candia took the overall 250<:c
Novice trophy after getting off to a slow starl.
In the first moto, !Gel Mattson brought his
Honda around tum one first and held the lead
for hvo laps. Grant Clabaugh was able to put a
move on Mattson for the leJJ and went on to
take the checkered flag. Candia had held the
third spot all Tace long.
In the final moto, Candia geared up early
and took control from the gate. Mattson challenged Candia throughout most of the race but
could not match the leader's pace. Clabaugh
crossed over in third.
GeofJ Walten. and Kyle Locke provided the
125cc lntermediate action. Walters was able to
control aU of mota one, but Locke came back
when it counted, making Walters earn the overall spot. Walters absconded with the holeshot in
mota two, but Locke was covering him like
white on rice during the first lap. Walters succumbed to Locke's pressure on lap two. Locke
then led the next two laps. Walters was abie to
take'away Locke's line on lap fur, and once out
front, he headed for the checkered.
The largest of the 21 classes was the 250cc
Beginner event. Steve Slade was able to smoke
the other 11 class riders in both motos. Slade had
no trouble in moto one and enjoyed his wire-towire victory over Peter Alesi. In the second
moto, Alesi got serious off the gate and took the
fustlap, with Marc Robertson second. Slade was
back in fifth. Slade charged through the pack on
the first lap and managed to take control of the
race going into the second la p. Once he was out
front, it was all Slade. Robertson, after falling
