Sullivan on track for threepeat at Seattle Road Race By Lisa Conzatti May 16; June 6 & 13; July 11 & 18 SEATILE, WA, APR. 4 Local Veteran racer Mike Sullivan began the Washington Motorcycle Road Racing Association's 1999 season by earning three wins out of his four classes. Sullivan has won the orthwest number-one title for the past years and is attempting to earn his third number-one plate in a row aboard two Team Green Kawasakis. Sullivan is very proficient at the 2.2-mile, 11turn, muJtiple-elevation Seattle International Raceway. He has been virtually unbeaten at the venue for the past two years. This year, several club racers have stepped up to challenge the track master by purchasing the fast new Yamaha Rls and R6s. Sullivan's most formidable adversary, David Cook, has both new Yamahas. Obviously aspiring to snatch the coveted number-one plate away from Sullivan, Cook was definitely pressuring his rival on Sw,day. Although Sullivan began racing before Cook was born, Cook has been a quick study in the last two years. They have provided some wery exciting racing for the fans. Aboard his ZX9, Sullivan won the Formula Unlimited race by several bike lengths over Cook, who was followed by Kawasaki jockey Karl Schenk. Sullivan led most of the Open Super Sport race until the last lap, when an undisclosed technical difficulty forced him to accept second place to Cook's first, while Mike Mitchell earned third on his Yamaha. On the 600ccs, Cook jumped out in front, but Sullivan slowly reeled him in and passed him on the downhill right-hand tum three on the third lap of the 600cc Super Sport race. It began to rain midway through this race, and the top two slowed considerably to save their new bikes from damage. Sullivan claimed first, Cook took second, and Rob Carpenter was third on his new Yamaha R6. By far the most intense race of the day for Cook and Sullivan was the 600cc Superbike contest. The rain had let up, and there were enough dry lines to let it hang out a litUe. -Both competitors were riding very aggressively. '1 know Dave (Cook) was giving it 110 percent, because T was, and he was right behind me," said Sullivan. "Those Yamahas are really fast, and Dave's a great racer." two ENTRY FEE: $30 $25 for 2nd class $15 for Pee Wee AMATEUR VZ BUrKS FOR VZ RIDERS, PEE WEE, 60 tt, 80 tt, 125 tt, 250 tt, VET, SENIORS, JR.
