En~nts Aaron Wersinger (In) leads Andreas Watt (826), Remington Way (18) and Robert Finochario (911) into tum one in 12SCc C-class action at Two Rivers. Black and Datta. By the end of lap one, Black had moved around Schneider and brought Dotta aLong with him. Starkweather ran into trouble at the base of the first tabletop and went down. However, Starkweather's troubles would not end there, as he came up a little short on a long downhill double and took a nasty-looking fall. Amazingly, he remounted and continued on, eventually finishing a respectable sixth. Black stuck ,,~th Carnes and managed to keep the pressure on him. In fact, the front-running duo opened up a huge gap on Schneider, who was all alone in third place. David Gassin and John Wear made their way through the pack and settled into the fourth and fifth positions, respectively. As the checkered flag waved, it was Carnes barely holding off Black for the win. Schneider held on to third, with Cassin and Wear rounding out the top five. Corns Photo by Dale Winczewski MILLIKEN. CO, MAR 27-28 Matthew Moore mounted a victorious return to racing aboard his RMl25 with four straight wins in 125cc C-dass action at the two-day Loretta Lynn's Amateur ational area qualifier, hosted by Two Rivers Racing. The event also served as the third stop on the Rocky Mountain Motocross Association's Spring Series circuit, and more than 600 riders competed throughout the weekend Miraculously, Moore has been fortunate enough to get back into racing after a eTash during practice several months ago left the 21-yearold native of Seattle, Washington, in a coma with a severely fractured femur. Having swept both 125cc C-elass motos on Saturday, Moore and 25 of his fellow racers loaded the gate on Sunday under sunny skl.es, with awesome race temperatures in the 60s. Boulder Yamaha/Dunlop-sponsored Aar n Werslnger grabbed the holeshot, with Two Rivers Racing's Robert Flnochario, Remington Way, Chad Riddle and Moore following. Riddle opted to triple into the quad-jump section, as most riders doubled in and out, and he got past Way for third. On the pipe, Moore quickly moved into second and began to cut away at Wersinger's five-second lead. With one lap to go, MooTe emerged from the whoop section with the lead and had enough left to pull out a five-second lead on Wersinger at the checkers. Riddle brought his Sinisalo/Sun/Tucker Rockysponsored Kawasaki in for third, with Fmochario and Way rounding out the top five. In the second moto, Way stuck his Yamaha into tum one first, with Wersinger, Kyle Huttenlow and Andreas Watt filing into position. A 10bike pileup occurred when HuttenJow experi· enced bike trouble in the narrow S-turn area. Within a lap, Wersinger had hopped into first, with Way in hot pursuit. Moore mounted another midmoto charge and, with two laps to go, he moved up from fifth to challenge the front-runners for the lead. Moore was on fire as he approached Way and Wersinger in the whoops and In one dean swoop blazed past both of them for the lead. Again, Moore proceeded to pull out a five-second lead at the checkers for his second overall \"tin on the weekend. Wersinger, Riddle, Way and Finochario followed. '1'm glad to have done so well this weekend, and [ look forward to competing at Loretta Lynn's lhis summer," said a jubilant Moore. "I have aspirations of racing in the 125cc A class someday and I'm glad to be back out here racing after my injuries and many months of therapy." Carnes conquers at AMP/GFI Spring Series Motocross By Jim and Valerie Enos TURLOCK, CA, MAR 21 Michael Carnes reigned over the 125cc Beginner class in a big way as he took ...vire-to-wire victories in both motos at the opening round of the 1999 AMP/GFI Spring Series, presented by Axo. More than 220 riders showed up at Oatfleld Raceway. some after contingency money and sotne craving competition. Carnes and his Yamaha took the holeshot in moto one, with Mike Starkweather, Loren Black, George Schneider and Russ Wilcox in tow. The trio of Carnes, Starkweather and Black set the pace as they quickly separated themselves from the pack. In fact, the three riders mirrored each other for the first few laps, with no one giving up any ground. Carnes managed to keep his lead with smooth riding and the ability to do the startline triple, a jump no others were attempting. Behind the lead trio, Jeremiah Gerber made his way up into fifth, but several falls ended his hopes for a top-five finish. Lucas Dotta took advantage of Gerber's misfortune and moved in behind Schneider for fifth. On the next lap, Schneider missed a shifl and allowed Datta to sneak by. Up front, Starkweather began pressuring Carnes and showed him a front wheel past the downhill double. However, that was as close as Starkweather would get, as Carnes took the win, with he and Starkweather (in second) and Black (in third) all one bike length apart. Datta, a little off the pace, cruised in fourth, with Schneider rounding out the top five. "The track was great today," said the PCP/FMF/Cyde Gear-back.ed Carnes. "I've been battling the flu, and those guys pushed me 10 my limit today." The second mota saw Carnes once again out front, followed by Starkweather, Schneider, (KTMl;.3, Michael Flol'\'S (Cob); 4.
