Events 1999 GFI California Winter Series North/South Showdown Vohland • M(Gavran sizz"le at showdown By Jim and Valerie Enos Photo by Joe Gonzales TURLOCK, CA, MAR. 28 MF Honda/ Alpinestars/Smithbacked Tallon Vohland decided to take in a local race and promptly smoked some of the best local Pros in the premier 250cc Pro class, while Bryan McGavran maae the journey northward and took the win in the 125cc Pro class at the GFI California Winter Series orth/South Showdown. The Showdown was held up north for the first time and attracted more than 450 riders to Oatfield Raceway. Top finishers in each class were rewarded for their efforts with 5-foot trophies and lots of contingency prizes. The 125cc Pro moto saw Yamaha of Modesto rider Danny Paladino snag the holeshot ahead of McGa·vran, Daniel Blair, Vohland and Ty Kady. The 17year-old McGavran made a move on Paladin'o on the long downhill triple to take over the lead while Vohland went around Blair and then made an off-track excursion. Luckily, he did not go down, and he quickly got on the rear tire of Paladino again, making his move in the whoop section. Vohland made hort work of McGavran's lead as he steadily reeled in F .;: c. « 44 McGavran. After McGavran exited the whoop section, he discovered the ensuing left-hand turn had a popular rut. McGavran stuttered in it, and as a result Vohland rammed his rear tire. Vohland was sent to the ground. McGavran went on his way as Vohland shook his head in disgust, still holding up second place. Meanwhile, Terry Bastard came off a rnidpack start, made his way up to fourth and began pressuring Woods for third. With a 2D-rninute, single-moto format in place, Wood began falling off the pace, and Bostard and Paladino easily made their way by. Bostard appeared fresh and began to gain ground on the leaders, but time was quickly running out. Wood turned on the afterburners and managed to get by Paladino once again for fourth. McGavran took the win, followed by Vohland and Bostard. Woods and Paladino rounded out the top fiv.e. "When I carne out of the whoop section, my bike popped into neutral in that turn and Vohland ended up hitting me," said McGavran. "1 didn't know he went down until 1 got down the straight a little farther, and then I didn't hear him. The track is kind of one-lined, but the jumps are fun and the dirt is real good." When asked about the incident, Vohland had his own opinion. '1 never raced that guy before," said Vohland. "I think he brake-checked me, and I wasn't expecting that. I'm used to racing with Rick Ryan and Matson, and 1 know how those guys race. Now that I know how he races, I think things will be different in the 250cc race." Bostard was more than pleased with his third-place performance. "1 was back in eighth or ninth on the start and got stuck behind someone," said Bastard. "1 just hung back there and tried to set a good pace and began picking off guys one by one." The 250cc Pro moto, sporting a 13rider gate, got under way with Paladino carving his way to the front of the pack once again, followed closely by McGavran, Nathan Woods, Jon Nelson and Vohland. As the pack hit the whoop section, McGavran got a little overzealous and nearly landed on Paladino as they hit the last whoop. Vohland quickly made his way into third and Paladino continued to hold his ground, even though McGavran and Vohland were bre~thing down his neck. McGavran appeared eager to get around Paladino, as the two had another near miss on a triclcy little downhill jump. Meanwhile, Vohland was playing it smart behind the duo and made his move on the turn before the long downhill triple. As Paladino went high and McGavr.an stayed low, Vohland split the two with a gutsy move that saw him go from third to first in the blink of an eye. The move stunned Paladino and McGavran, and Vohland quickly took off and steadily opened up a lead that would eventually turn into a quarter-lap lead by the end. McGavran made his way past Paladino on the downhill double and et out after Vohland, an objective that would prove unobtainable. While Nelson fell off the pace, Dennis Stapleton and Oscar Valdez moved up into fifth and sixth respectively, while Woods, in fourth, hunted down Paladino. Woods turned up the heat and passed Paladino on he short straight section. With time running out, Paladino made a last run at Woods and passed him back on the downhill triple, only to have Woods return the favor. Paladino basically let Woods go and worked on holding off Valdez, who had displaced Stapleton. At the checkers, Vohland took the win with a huge lead over McGavran. Woods came in third, with Paladino and Valdez rounding out the top five. "1 hung back and followed those guys for a bit and then saw an opening and just went for it," said Vohland. "After that, I just et a good pace and knew 1had the speed.'~ "Vohland came out of nowhere," McGavran said. "After I got around Paladino, he was gone." In the 125cc Intermediate class, local hotshoe Ryan Morais earned back-toback victories in both his motos. In the first moto, Dusty Walters gave Morais a run for his money as he absconded with the holeshot and opened up a slight lead over Morais. That lead quickly diminished as Morais clicked it up a notch and made the pass on Walters on the small step-up. Morais took off and left the pack. Kawasaki-mounted David Boothe and Craig Truglio battled for second, with Truglio edging out Boothe in the end. Walters took fourth, foJ: lowed by Nick McBride in fifth. Morais took the holeshot in the second moto for yet another convincing win. Suzuki-mounted Jesse Dawson put in an exceptional ride and had second aU to himself for mo t of the moto. Truglio put on a charge after a fifth- place start to snag third and second overall on the day. Boothe, who took a third in the first moto, got caught up in a pileup that ended his hopes for a top finish, while Walters, surviving a crash in the- whoops, managed a third overall on the day. "Walters was in front of me in the first moto and was kind of blocking me," said the Chaparral/Merced Powersports/No Fear-backed Morais. "After 1 got around him, it was pretty easy. 1 holeshotted my second moto, made a few bobbles here and there, but otherwise I had no problems out there." _ Oatfield Raceway Turlock, california Results: March 28, 1999 50 P/W JR (4-6): 1.
