IS there anyone else at any track thaI
you feed off of?
II the top guy I try to watch. I have a lot
fiof respect for the talent that's out there in
Superbike. Anybody would have to. lf I get
to watch Doug Chandler or somebody run
through a comer, I try to keep my eyes open.
But I'm getting now to the point that I kind of
know how they would approach it and I
know how I approach it. I'm probably learning about myself more now and what I like to
do out there, more so than watching as many
people. But with Daytona, it's kind of a special case; it's a tricky place to run the 200miler and Scott really knew what he was
doing there. But, yeah, all the top guys - I
wa tch them as much as I can.
Q
A-
YOU said you were going to score as
many points as you can and see what
happens when the new bike comes. Does
that mean you can contest for the title?
l learned about contesting the title last
year when I went from 11th to fourth in
the championship over the course of the season. Anything can happen in this sport. Obviously it's been proven that you can be taken
out with an injury. You can have a couple of
engines blow. You can have other problems
associated with off-track activities, let's say.
. So who knows? I'm not going to count myself
out. I'm going to count myself in because I
know what it takes to win championships I've won four of them, and three more in FormuJa USA. So I won seven championships in
my career, and you don't win them in the
first race or the second race, you win them
with consistency. Yeah, I think we've got as
good a shot as anybody in the beginning
here. We'll see how it plays out. And in 600,
too -that's something that I want now. I want
to win that championship bad. And I think
that I've got the team and the bike to do it.
And all that I've got to do is keep finishing
up and try to get on the podium every race.
Daytona was unfortunate in that I had a miscue with the tum-one incident. I think we're
very competitive in that class. In that class, [
feel that J have just as good a chance, if not
better for the championship.

Lytle leaps to Max Track
Motocross win
Casey Lytle overcame rel!r-brake
problems to claim the 125cc Proclass win at round two of the Max
Track Gold Rush Series in Piru,
California.
began to slow and allowed Langdon to close in.
Langdon made the most of the opportunity and
passed Lytle with one lap to go. Lytle nursed his
bike home in second, well ahead of third-placed
Labrador.
"My rear brake went out,'" said Lytle, as he
pumped up and down on the lifeless brake
pedal. "And the bike also got slow when it started to heat up."
Fortunately for Lytle, his mechanic, Dennis
Petracca, was on hand to do some racing himself. With Lytle's best interests in mind, Petracca
changed out of his gear and pulled the necessary
parts off of his own race bike so that Lytle could
race in moto two.
Langdon grabbed the holeshot in the second
moto and pulled out a slight lead while Lytle
scrambled through the field. Once Lytle got into
second, he began to close in on Langdon, who
did a spectacular flip in the long whoop section.
Lytle motored past the downed rider and on to
an easy victory. Labrador crossed the finish line
second, while Langdon picked it up quickly
enough to salvage third.
In the Vet Junior class, roommates Eric
Huffine and Steve Edwards swapped moto wins
in a classic, bar-banging battle. Huffu,e won the
all-important second mota and came away with
. the bragging rights - for at least one week. Third
went to Rick Smith.

round of the Marc Peters-promoted Gold Rush
Classic Series, held at Max Track Motocross

bad start in the second race to come away with
the li.on's share of the purse.
In the first moto, Lytle ripped a perfect
holeshot and led Kawasaki Team Green's Tim
Langdon and Ralph's-sponsored Andreu
Labrador onto the hilly Max Track course. Lytle
immediately opened up a commanding lead
over Langdon and looked to have an easy win in
the bag. At the halfway point, however, Lytle
