It turned the course into a survival test for those who rode it. Red Georgia clay can be slippery when it is dry; add in 12 hours of rain and it gets more difficult, as KTM's Allen Gravitt knows too well. "I got stuck in a rut up to my rear fender," said Gravitt. "If another rider hadn't helped me get O\1t, I might still be in there." Despite his troubles, Gravitt still finished ihe day in the runner-up position. Neeley Racing's Jason Chancey finished third. "I just never felt like I was riding good all day," said Chancey. "I had the same trouble as everybody else. I just didn't have that good of a day." Husaberg-mounted Michael Grizzle finished fourth. The club laid out close to 90 actual ground miles. With all the rain, some spots turJ;led into swamps, and rideis were getting stuck everywhere. More than 300 riders pre-entered for the race, but only 257 die-hards left the line. Out of those brave souls, only 87 managed to finish. The first section was six miles of what should have been easy warmup trail, but it became a major feat just to make it through. Ramey posted the fast time with a three-point loss. Gravitt and Chancey both dropped four, and Grizzle dropped six. - "Franklin got me a point in the first section, as usual," said Gravitt. "It takes me a bit to warm up." Grizzle also ran into a bit of trouble. "I managed to get stuck about halfway in the trail," Grizzle related. "I stuck it bad. Then, while I was pulIing the bike out, Jason (Chancey) came up behind me, hit a log and fell. I knew .it was going t6 be a long day." Several miles of dirt road carried riders to the next section, a 10-miler. The check-in was at 16.8 miles and was the first tie breaker. Ramey once again posted the fast time, a 6:23. Gravitt was next with a 7:14, followed by Chancey with a 9:33. Grizzle sneaked in with a 9:59. '1 was changing my goggles at each reset, which was helping," said Ramey. "I never had any problems on the trail." By this time, it had stopped drizzling, but it was still cold and everyone was soaked completely. The gas stop was next, but many riders found themselves without much of a break as they were so late getting to the stop. At 44 miles, it was on to a long 18 miles of tough trail. Riders were checked in; then they hacla check at 52 miles and another at 62 miles, Carolina Uttra Series, Round 2 Walker sweeps Sandhills By Kirk Johnson CHESTERFIELD, SC, MAR. 28 amaha-mounted Kevin Walker blew into Sandhills Motorsports Park and laid claim to three class wins in convincing fashion, leading every lap. After a few inonths' layoff, Walker wanted to let the competitiDn know that the layoff had not slowed him one bit. Nearly perfect weather conditions greeted the record crowd of more than 420 riders at round two of the Carolina Ultra Series. With the great turnout, racing action was intense in all classes. Suzuki-mounted Troy Crisp took the holeshot in the first 250cc Pro moto over Walker and Jered Black. Walker, not content with the number-two position, was all over the Suzuki rider, looking for a way around. Before the lap was up, Walker had assumed the lead and opened a gap that would not be challenged the entire moto. Behind Walker, 'Crisp was feeling pressure from Capps and Black, who eventually went around both Capps and Crisp to claim second. With Crisp and Capps slowly falling Y Cherokee Enduro Greensboro, Georgia Results; March 14, 1999 (Round 14) OIA:. Franklin Ramey ffi. 1i..A: 1. Allen Gravitt; 2. Jason Chancey; 3.
