them off one at a time, and when they
told me I was in fifth at the first check, I
couldn't believe it."
The course veered west and into the
moon rocks for a twisting, enjoyable
ride before snaking its way toward the
pits. At the end of the 41-mile first loop,
Capt had his Pro Circuit Kawasaki holding down first, with the Smith/BRPsponsored Baumann in second. Fullmer
had continued his climb and had his
Stroker Yamaha sitting in third. Team
Green's Steve Hengeveld, the District 37
number-one plate holder in the 2S0cc
class, rolled into the pits leading his
class in fourth overall. Mike Koncur
rounded out the top five at the halfway
point on his Montclair Yamaha-backed
YZ400.
The second loop was an energy sapper consisting of deep, sandy bottom
whoops, rock piles, and several waterfall drop-offs.
"That one canyon was a lot of work,
but then it was a lot of fun, too," said
Fullmer.
"I caught up to Capt a couple times
in the tight, rocky stuff," said Baumann,
"but when it would open up again, he
knew he could use the dust to his
advantage, and he did."
The technical, rocky second loop was
capped off with an 8-mile drag race
across a rolling, grassy valley. Capt
crossed the finish line first to claim the
Chuck Stearns Memorial Trophy, which
goes to the overall winner each year.
Baumann held on for second, but
Kawasaki's Hengeveld slipped by
Fullmer, who had fallen within sight of
the finish, for third.
"About a mile from the end, I hit the
vertical bank of a shallow wash at speed
and went down hard," replied Fullmer.
"I tried to remount quickly, but 1 was
pretty dazed, and that's when
Hengeveld got me."
Fullmer recovered and was awarded
the Al Baker Memorial Trophy for winning the Four-Stroke class at fourth
overall.
Chuck McBurney rolled home fifth to
claim the Open Expert win, followed by
Vet 2S0cc winner John Spaeth. Kevin
Hasten took top Senior 2S0cc honors at
seventh overall, while Morgan Crawford
turned in a splendid ride with eighth
, overall and first in the 200cc division.
Moto-West's Charlie Barney brought his
Gas-Gas across the line ninth, and Mike
Koncur, who had crashed at the same
spot as Fullmer literally moments later,
rowlded out the top 10.
Darrin Moloznik was the top Amateur' finisher at a very impressive 16th
overall, while Scott Saunders topped the
Novice division by coming in 68th.
"There was one spot that could have
had a danger marker and one road
crossing that was not marked that gave
me a scare," said Capt, "but as far as the
layout, you just could not have asked
for a better race course."
"The Checkers are a different bund1,
• but when it comes time to layout their
course, they're all business," replied Baumann. "They always have an awesome
race."·
Not only did Pro Circuit equipped riders dominate the Laughlin U.S. Hare Scrambles taking the
top 5 spots Overall and 8 of the top 10 - but the winning continued at the Pro CircuitlD&S Spring
National Championship where riders on Pro Circuit equipped bikes wore out the podium steps.
