AMA Mid-South Cham~onship Series, Round 10 Plessinger • wins Charlotte By Debbie Allen CHARLOm, TN, MAR. 28 ound 10 of the AMA Mid-South Champion hip Series attracted 226 competitors, but it was former G CC and National Hare Scrambles Champion Scott Plessinger who came away with the overall win. "I needed this win to build my confidence for Loretta Lynn's," said the Suzuki-mounted Plessinger, who seemed to enjoy the 7-mile course. "Most of the Mid-South races are really tight, but this a.1e was more like a GNCC-type course." Plessinger had a good ride from start to finish. He gra bbed the holeshot and got away early from the rest of the AA class. Plessinger stayed in the lead for the first two laps with nearly a minute's lead over second-placed Shad Ricketts. Ricketts, however, later gained control of the lead on lap three and led until lap six. Early on, Ricketts struggled with a poor start and worked his way up to second place by the end of the first lap. '1 had a real bad start," said Ricketts. "It took me two kicks to get started, and everybody was in the woods." After catching up, Ricketts' arms pumped up about halfway through the second lap, and Blair Bersano got by him. "After I calmed down and relaxed, I got around Blair," said Ricketts. '1 was 40 seconds behind Plessinger, and I got to feeling a lot better and caught up to Scott (Plessinger). I led him for three laps, but there was no pulling away from him. He made a pass on the la t lap, and I was right behind him." TM-mounted John Maschino was in second place off the start. "Blair passed me a couple of miles in to the race," said Maschino. Maschino never got back around the Gas Gas-backed Blair Bersano, as he eased back from second place to sixth by the end of the race. Bersano, however, managed third place quite well. Although he swapped back and fo~ with Shad Ricketts sever- R al times and followed close to Plessinger for almost a whole lap, he still managed to slide into third place each time at the score tent. "Ricketts was right behind me in a real tight off-camber section," said Bersano. "He went on by as I got held up behind lappers." Blair continued his campaign for third place aU the way to the finish. Meanwhile, a good battle was fought for the 250cc/Open A-c1ass win, and it was P.A. Allen who came in on top. Allen celebrated his 18th birthday by winning the 250cc/Open A class, wrapping up the championship for the series and sliding his Suzuki into fourth place overall. Kawasaki-mounted Gary Hendricks would not ease up on the 25Occ/Open A winner throughout the race. The two swapped back and forth with Maschino and Sampson for two laps. "We were just all right there together, and I finished next to P.A.'s rear wheel," said fifth-placed Hendricks. At the finish, TM riders John Maschino and Mike Sampson pulled into the score tent in sixth and seventh overall. Four-Stroke A-class winner Harvey Whitaker came in eighth, and AA-elass racer Steve Gordon and 200cc A rider Mike McCrea rounded out the top 10 overall. _ Mid-South Winter Hare Scrambles Series Charlotte,Tennessee Results: March 28, 1999 (Round 10) O/A: 1.
