The AMA will offer its prestigious Horizon Award in three disciplines of racing again in 19.99: road racing, motocross and dirt tracle Established in 1997, the AMA Horizon Award is presented to outstanding amateur riders who demonstrate professional potential at three premier AMA events: The AMA Road Racing Grand Championships, the AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships and the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships. The dirt track championships will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana; the motocross cllampionships will take place at Loretta Lynn's ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee; and the road race will be held at New Hampshire International Speedway. The capsule will be sealed a.t midnight on De.cember 31, 2001 and will remain on display at the museum in perpetuity. For a tax-deductible contribution of $100, your name, AMA number and your message about motorcycling (50 words or less) will be saved to a digital file. Sidecar reminder: The 1999 Sidecar World Cup will take place in conjunction with the following rounds of the World Superbike Championship: Phillip Island, Australia (April 18); Donington Park, England (May 2); AIbacete, Spain (May 16); Monza, Italy (May 30); Nurburgring, Germany (June 13); Misano, Italy (June 27); Brands Hatch, England (August 1); A-I Ring, Austria (August 29); Assen, Holland (September 5);"and Hockenheim, Germany (September 12). The technical rules for the Sidecar World Cup are as follows: Maximum cubic capacity for four-stroke engines is 1200cc; maximum cubic capacity for two-stroke engines is 500cc; two-stroke engines will be allowed until December 31, 2000; fuel is restricted to unleaded. The Sidecar World Cup will use a Superpole method of qualifying with the six best teams from regular qualifying making it to the Superpole, which will determine pole position.. According to the FIM, 20 teams have entered the 1999 Sidecar World Cup. Craig Vetter has donated a collection of his motorcycles to the AMA Motorcycle HaIl of Fame Museum in Pickerington, Ohio, the most notable being the Triumph Hurricane Prototype, the 1973 Triumph Bonneville IT Prototype, the 1975 Rickman Racer, the 1980 Mystery Ship and the 1980 Streamliner Fuel Economy Racer. "We're very excited and honored that Craig Vetter has chosen the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum to preserve his many contributions to the motorcycle industry," said Aaron Fitch, museum director. "His addition of his one-of-a-.kind machines to the museum's permanent archives will ensure that his effect on motorcycling will never be forgotten." Racing Stripe Xl Two new Suells I f Buell's run-of-the-mill Harley-Davidson-powered sportbike isn't out of the ordi- nary enough for you, two new limited-edition Lightning Xl models will be made available in May: the Carbon Fiber Extreme Xl and the Racing Stripe Xl. The $11,299 Carbon Fib~r model features carbon fiber weaved with a blue-tinted Dupont Kevlar-brand fiber on the front fairing, chin spoiler, tank cover and wiIldscreen, with the Buell Pegasus icon on the windscreen. The frame and wheels are finished in a "Nuclear Blue" color (now an option on .the other Xl models). The bike also is equipped with billet-aluminum footpegs and a numbered gas cap. Production for North America is limited to 250. A version of the Carbon Fiber Extreme Xl with a white frame and wheels (as well as a carbon-fiber inner fender) will be produced for Japan. Only 100 will be produced. The Racing Stripe Xl is equipped with what its name suggests: a racing stripe. The stripe is white, with a smaller stripe aCCGmpanying it down the center of the "Blue Streak" painted bodywork. The frame and wheels are black, and the billet footpegs are fitted. PM wheels are optional. Available for $10,899, 400 will be available in. the States, with 350 earmarked for the European market.
