CYCLE NEWS '999 SANCTIONED Na1:ional Dual Sport: Series Stalmacle stomps REM Glen Helen MX By Rocky Hash APPALACH'A/v DUAL SPORT TOUR . SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAR. 13 . Fredrik Stalmaele took lull advantage of the perfeet track conditions that resulted from midweek rains, as he topped the 125cc Junior division at Racing Enterprises Motosports' weekly Saturday Motocross, held at Glen Helen Raceway Park. When the first moto left the line under bright, sunny skies, Stalmade immediately served notice to the competition as he motored to a big holeshot. Behind:;talmaele, Steve Sailing positioned his YZ125 into the second slot, and Kaipo Chung maneuvered into third. When the pack went into the back canyon for the first time, the top five positions were filled out by Jeremy and Joel Murphy, whose yellow Suzuki RMl25s really stuck out among the sea of blue Yamahas that were running up front. Right away, Stalmaele and Sailing began to separate themselves from the pack, as the two racers diced hard for the lead. Chung held comfortably in the third spot, some three seconds back from the skirmish at the front. By ti,e third lap, Stalmacle had scratched out a five-bikelength lead on Sailing, while the lVIorphy brothers were engaged in a duel. The battle led them to the rear fender of Chung, who still held the third spot. By the midway point, St.lm.ele had opened up a two-second lead on Sailing. As the moto wore on, SaiJing appeared to settle down and find his lines as he started to close on talmacle. When the two-lap signal was given, Sailing was within two bike lengths of the leader, and he looked to be setting up a pass attempt. The three-way battle ror third was settled on the white-flag lap, as both of the Murphy brothers went around Chung. pushing the Yamaha pilot back to ruth. Stalmaele reacted well to the late pressore or Sailing, and he turned. up the wick just enough to maintain his ty,'o-bike Ie.:,d to the checkers for tl)e moto win. WIth less than half a lap to go. Joel Murphy passed hi brother Jeremy to talce away the third spot. Chung grabbed the second-moto holeshot. and Kenny Sievers pushed his Yamaha into second. Sailing again gol a good start and was running third, ahead of first-moto winner Stalmncle, who was involved in a first-turn pileup. Out front, Chung set a blistering pace. and he opened up a two-second lead on Sievers in second. Stalmaele was charging through the pack, and by the halfway mark he was making his presence felt as he moved up into the fourth spot, behind S.,iling. Chwlg started having bilee problems and he dropped dramatically ofr the pace and turned the lead over to Sievers. Perhaps feeling the effects of riding two classes on the day, Sailing was unable to offer up much resistance to Stalmade in the battle for the overall win, Stalmacle motored around Sailing as the two-lap signal was given, Sievers' lead was nol safe, as Stalmade put the pa s on him during the white-flag lap to complete his charge to the front. At the checkers, it was Stalmade taking the win and Sievers riding in for second. Sailing held 011 for third. With a double moto sweep. talmacle was the overall winner on the day. ailing was next best, posting a 2-3 tally. A trong second mota earned Sievers the thirdplace brass with his 6-2 scores. eN JR. I.
